Black Cherry vs. Sophy's Rose

I just got a Black Cherry at Merrry Gro about 3 weeks ago. It has 4 blooms on it already. I'm considering it for the front, where it gets afternoon hot Florida sun. I also have a Sophy's Rose in a pot that I might put there. I want a red or dark pink. I spray weekly.

Which will be better for:

#1 Repeat

#2 Size, I need it to stay small (well small for Florida)

#3 Blooms holding up (not burning on the ends)

Nancy..I can't speak for "Black Cherry" but I am growing "Sophy's Rose" as a matter of fact I have two of them..she is a medium/dark pinkish red..heavy bloomer and I have her in alot of sun..I can't imagine her liking to live in a pot..she just gets so huge!!..I am constantly pruning her back to keep some civility to that naughty but beautiful girl!!..Jeanne

That helps, thanks. It is on fortuniana so she'll probably get even bigger than yours if I put her back in the ground. She was in the ground but she sprawled like some Austins do. She's doing OK in the pot, not getting big. Keeping her toes pinched I guess keeps the growth down.

David Austin roses vs kordes roses

I have a loamy clay here in zone 6. I have tried a number of Austins and I loved them, but I usually ended up with some kind of foliage issue. It's been awhile, so I don't remember what. I keep trying different roses that are thought to be good in a no spray garden and last spring I planted - Savannah and Beverly and Pope John Paul. Savannah is a Kordes - my first. It was enjoyable in it's first season. Pretty foliage and I liked the color and texture of the blooms. It didn't grow too much or produce many flowers, but I didn't expect a lot in it's first year starting off bare root from Palatine. But by the end of the season, it was suddenly showing some problem with one of the canes. Not insects, but disease. I left it alone and just hoped for the best this spring. This spring, it had some leaf buds on it, but they deteriorated as soon as they opened and while the other roses were pushing out more buds and then opening leaves, Savannah did nothing and looked worse. So I decided to cut all the canes back to the ground. And I thought that was the end of it really, but to my surprise, it sprouted new canes - about 3 of them. Right now it's about 6-8" tall and has leafed out and looks okay. Not a great start for a rose though. Beverly is another Kordes and last year it did fine and produced more flowers than Savannah and looked healthy. This year it has filled out with leaves. I usually have roses starting to open by June 1st, so, we'll see how it does this year. The foliage looked clean all season last year and so far this year too. Maybe by the end of this season I'll be able to make a better comparison.

I have a Black Cherry in the front of my house. At this point it is about 2-1/2 by 2-1/2. A good repeater and relatively clean - in other words it does not break out in spots if my spray schedule gets out of whack. This is full southern frying all day long exposure and the blooms do not fry. The bed is well mulched and holds the moisture pretty well.

I've been pretty impressed.

How BC's scent? I found one at the nursery the other day in the discount section but I read that she only had light or no scent. Are the flowers worth no scent?

BC has rosy scent, not too light, and they hold up well in the heat. I got it in mid June with some blooms and itÂs so far clean. There have been new growths and buds set again on the bush. I think the rebloom will be good for this rose.

BC is a great rose. I have had one for 3 years and it usually is in constant bloom. I did have problems with black spot due to our very wet June, but since I have sprayed it is recovering nicely. I find the fragrance to be light and fruity and the blooms last a long time. Haven't heard of Sophy's rose. Why not get both!

No room for both, boo hoo. It's just as well. I'd break the bank if I had room.
