Cutting Down the Tree to Save the Tree?

I planted 7 bald cypress in similar areas where I cannot water them. These trees were all 2-3' tall in 5-gal. pots. One of them was cut down by rabbits or some such. The others grew slightly but then stopped and died as we had an unprecendented 6 weeks of early drought and multiple 100+ F days set in. The cut-down one has resprouted and has a healthy green leader up about 12" high. Did cutting down the tree actually result in saving the tree? Is this something I should repeat when planting other trees I cannot water?
