What is the hardiest variety of paw paw?
Comments (4)I see that no one has answered your question in a week, and I personally can't do so either, since I'm in 6A in Michigan, thanks to the moderating influence of the Great Lakes and the "urban heat island" of metropolitan Detroit. I think if you wanted to try paw paws in your area (Iowa, if memory serves me), I'd try looking for some of the cultivars selected in Ontario or Michigan. This company in Ontario sells only seedlings at this time, not grafted ones, but they are from their own stock, so perhaps they would be a little more hardy due to northern provenance. Here is a link that might be useful: Grimo Nursery in Ontario...See MorePawPaw Grafting
Comments (48)@jianhuayegreentree, I have uploaded a picture. Two cicles are the areas of two branches i grafted early spring but they did not survive finally. They are the only branches at that time. All other branches are the new growrh this year. I will try to graft again next year. preferably, i would like not to cut the main trunk but any other branches will be fine. i can choose the topmost two branches (two red lines) other than the main trunk to graft. do you think what the probability for them to survive? i am thinking it may be easier for scion to survive when tree become bigger because the growth vogor will reduce so the competition between scion and other growth may not be that strong. how big is your tree that you had grafted successfully? A picture of the tree and the growth condition of the survived brach would be very helpful. Thanks for the comments. @jianhuayegreentree....See MoreSupershy noobie here!

Comments (11)Hey there, looking for some info on paw paw grown in Chicago area, I found this 5-year-old post... In case anybody still checks in here: I have two paw paw trees and I live in Chicago NW burbs. I've had one Pennsylvania Golden, survived three winters without any problems and this year I planted a second one NC-1. Both I bought online. The one I got this year was from some place in Oregon. Last weekend (Sept. 26) I was hiking in Warren Dunes State Park in Michigan and I found some paw paw fruits at last. So growing the trees I never really tasted the fruit. I liked it and I am more excited to grow them at my place....See Morebrandon7 TN_zone7
