I saw this variety on eBay and think it is magnificent.

Yes, and I found it easy to grow. If the seller is Bluemountainviolets you will get a very nice plant.

LOL, now my garden has turned into a butterfly pickup bar! The Tigers have started courting, and I saw a pair mating on the Honeysuckle. I tried to get pics, but 1. they were just too high up on the bush to get a good shot and 2. I really wouldn't appreciate voyeurs photographing my DH and I during our tender moments so it's probably more courteous that I leave that one undocumented! But the others are now circling around, swooping and diving around each other in a frenzied carousel of yellow and black. I'll see an occasional flash of orange as a Gulf Frit passes through, or a splash of black from a curious Black Swallowtail, but today has been the Tigers' day in the sun. I'm lovin' it!

We are trying to get our front porch prepared now and have run into a very costly issue I wanted to ask for input on. The porch is going to have a 4 inch slab and we are surrounded below the porch with poured concrete walls. The space below the floor level to the top of the poured walls is about 24”. So we have that distance to fill and prepare for the concrete porch. We first want to know if anyone has some thoughts on how to secure the exposed area at the top of the safe room in that 24” area between the pad and the wall? We just feel that a simple brick edge perimeter is not enough since we are coming up in a secure 8-10” thick poured safe room. We thought of putting concrete board on the exterior prior to the brick ledge coming up to cover for aesthetics? We also thought of metal plates for protection? This would not just be for security but to continue providing safety from storms or fire etc. The other part of this dilemma is our room has a span up to 15 feet between the walls. Our builder priced a fabricator making metal floor trusts to support the pad and build up the deck to floor level above the poured walls. The fabricator hit us with a $28,000 estimate to do this! (that’s not concrete or flagstone, ONLY steel) We know there is a much cheaper way. We are not totally opposed to putting some support posts within the room to save money if need be. Does anyone know what we can do to span this area and hold up the pad while not costing us a fortune in trusts? I was wondering if buying stock trusts and/or channels or even beams to support the pad decking would be far less than custom metal fabricating? Then we were also thinking of if LVL beams could be used for savings? We are obviously at a disadvantage here because it will take some knowledge of spans and weight calculation and I am sure we will have to get an engineer to approve as well. This is just a shocker in terms of cost because we plan on having a lot more metal and concrete elevated work in the rear of the house too and with this price for our front porch we are in shock. Anyone that can give some suggestions on the best way to resolve this be so appreciated!

With luck they should grow and flower as normal next year. ==>> well.. thats an understatement ... if these have been sitting in poor improper conditions.. say in a bigbox or hardware store.. odd are very high .. little or nothing will come of them ... but if only one or two do.. then you probably beat the bargain.. as those two at full price probably offset the loss of the rest .. if they do sprout green.. we need that green to feed the bulb for next year... proper storage of bulbs.. aka.. onions.. or root stock like potatoes.. etc .. was the old fashioned root cellar ... 50ish degrees.. dampish.. etc ... most of us now would call that an unheated basement ... bigbox is not a root cellar.. lol ... ken

It is a very good oldie with a wonderful variegation. LARGE.

It doesn't bloom all the time - it blooms, takes rest, blooms again.
I would suggest to put a leaf down as soon as you get your plant. Your home grown "Tiger" - or "Tiger's Son" - another gorgeous variety by Irene Fredette - will always beat the "imported one".

You can order leaves for both Tiger and Tiger 's Son at Cedar Creek Violets - and they carry lots of interesting oldies - plus David Rollins is a hybridizer himself.

Is it hard to root leaves for a complete newbie? I am terrified at the prospect.

Nope, not hard to root leaves. Have you checked out the African violet FAQ? It will answer a ton of your questions and give simple instructions. When you cut the leaf just make the cut angle to the front of the leaf; you don't want babies growing behind.

From the AV FAQ:

How can I propagate an African violet by leaf cutting?

1. Choose a healthy leaf from the second or third row of your African violet plant..
2. Cut stem at 45 degree angle and place in damp potting soil. (Leaves placed in water or vermiculite will make water roots or vermiculite roots and will take longer to adjust to soil.)
3. Cut off top 1/3 of leaf. Place with name tag if available. Put plastic sack over pot for a week or so.
4. Place pot in indirect light from a window or under florescent lights.
5. Babies should start growing within 4-6 weeks. When babies are about 2 inches tall, or have at least 4 leaves per plantlet, separate and put each into individual pots. Place plastic on these for about a week. Then treat as mature plants.

before you try to root Tiger - try to root the leaves from the plants you already have - just for practice.

I use 1:1:1 soil for rooting, the same as for the mature plants - but I heard people had good luck just sticking them in reconstituted Jiffy pellets and keeping them covered - in a angel food cake container for example.

Oh my! How beautiful! I have not seen any as beautiful as this one! Most I've seen have mostly green leaves with only a few spots of the whiter color. Are you possibly selling leaves? Please let me know!
