Aegopodium is one of the worst thug plants I know. It seeds, spreads by runners and is very difficult to keep in bounds and even worse to get rid of.

I live in Wisconsin, and after having just finished a battle with the all green version of Bishop's weed, I would NOT want this plant in any kind of garden situation that I can think of. There are so many other wonderful plants that can take the place of that thug.... why do you think your friend wants to give you some of that? It doesn't have to reseed, which it can, because it spreads with underground runners, which is worse.
I would think this one through before accepting any Bishop's weed, period

This is one of the few plants that I have resorted to using RoundUp to rid myself of. It is beautiful, which is why I planted it, but it spreads by underground runners (don't know about the seeds) and it is very aggressive. It can be pulled, but everywhere the root breaks, it resprouts. I'm with Linda C, "thanks, but no thanks". Sounds like you have already planted it though so either dig it up or watch it VERY carefully.

Wow sounds like its unanimous that I shouldnt get it then. Thanks for the help I heard it could be invasive thats why I thought of the spot I was gonna put it in.I do like the plant and the way it lookes, its very pretty, but I dont think its that pretty at the expence of my other gardens.

I hate to say it but I can't believe anyone would offer this plant to someone without all the warnings as above. Unless they were a new gardener and just did not know.

Well when she moved in about 5 years ago it was there and she just kept mowing it down because she wasnt a big gardener then this year she decided to put in a bed and asked if I wanted any and she was puting some in her bed. So yeah she is a new gardener.

Invasive is the word for this plant.
She will continue to find it for years after she thinks it's gone.

It's a truly beautiful plant IN A POT that is SET ON CONCRETE so the roots can't work out of the pot into the ground. AND, you must deadhead to prevent seeding. Such a pity. It is a beautiful plant.

I finally got rid of mine (planted by previous owner) when we put an addition on our house. The backhoe got it all. In another area I had sprayed it several times with round-up, it finally died when the county widened the road and ..yup. once again it took the back-hoe to do it in.

In this area zone 4/5 many people grow it around the base of trees and control with a lawn mower--works fine. My father has a patch with a few rows of patio blocks enclosing it and it gives him no trouble, for the last 28 years anyway. It's a good plant for difficult areas just don't let it run into your perennial beds. Personally I like it very well at the base of lilacs or shallow rooted shade trees.

It spreads like nobody's business, into grass and beyond. It will go under concrete or brick areas and come out on the other side! I agree, the only place is in an area which is so far removed from other beds that it CAN'T spread into anywhere important, a pot set on concrete, or in an area where absolutely nothing else will grow. It spreads underground and those runner go really deep. Getting rid of it is next to impossible. It laughs at RoundUp. I'm in the process of removing it as well, and it may very well drive me crazy. The tiniest little piece left in the ground, and you'll have a new patch before you know it. I would advise against this plant in the garden.

And I always laugh when I see it sold in nurseries. $5 for a small plant, labelled as "groundcover" with no hint at it's invasiveness and problematic nature. I hate to see that!

I also should add that while the variegated version can be pretty, it will often revert back to the plain green after some time, even if just in patches.

The variegated version is pretty but not worth the aggravation you'll have in the next decade trying to keep it under control.

I've never heard of it referred to as snow on the mountain.

A friend of mine is now getting into gardening and regrets that she let it grow when she bought her house and it was there already. Trying to reclaim flower beds covered with bishop's weed is very difficult. I tried to tell her when she bought the house but she thought it was so pretty.

It does have solid green patches.
