No till practices...really that bad to soil flora and fauna?

I have read that it is a bad thing to till soil for beds and veggie gardens that it somehow destroys the animals, plants and soil structure. I have crappy red Virginia clay that has had all of it's top soil removed compliments of the builder. Can someone explain how amending my soil with organic matter tilled in with a Mantis tiller is harmful as the results have been just the opposite. I am lazier now and pretty much do the layering thing, but if I am planting a palm tree, shrub or ornamental tree, I always amend the area 3-4 times as large as the rootball, plant, mulch well and water regularly. Not one of my plantings has become rootbound in this process. I have also just dug a small hole in the clay for Eucalyptus and Live Oak, mulched and watered well with similar results, so what is the correct method or is there really one?
