Hawthorn suggestions?

Hi all. For our upcoming anniversary my wife and I are looking at adding a hawthorn tree to our property. We currently have mostly conifers, maples and oaks, but nothing like a hawthorn. We have good soil, but lots of dry summer weather and windy conditions in winter. We also have lots of deer and birds.

We would like something that's low maintenance, doesn't get too large, and has lots of orange or red berries during the fall and winter months, something that birds would enjoy.

Last fall we noticed some very nice hawthorn trees planted near a local shopping center of all places, but have no idea which hawthorn it might be. From what we can tell the trees resemble Crataegus viridis 'Winter King' hawthorns, but the fruit looks slightly larger than Winter King and perhaps more orange in color. The bark looks grayish in color and has deep fissures, almost looking like it peels.

Anyone have a good recommendation for hawthorn trees for backyard use?

Thanks.

Dave
