? re type of lettuce

Hi all

I'm going to WS some lettuce for ny friend (also kale and spinach). I like to grow it, but have no place to put it, so it is a perfect trade.

I would like to know what kinds of lettuce you recommend as tasty.

Last year was my first year to WS lettuce, kale and spinach - it is ridiculously easy!

But the variety which I bought at the supermarket - just at random - was called Prestige - and I thot it very bland.

My friend likes Mescaline (did I get the name right? I mean the lettuce, not the drug, lol) which is a strong taste, so I think she would like stronger-tasting lettuce.

My Lettuce that I W.S. for myself which I have already sown is Salad Bowl, Grand Rapids, and Butter Crunch. another good one is Red Sail and I forgot to get any of it. I usually direct sow a varity pack early sprin because wife likes the areuga or bitters. jim

Forgot to say, if you like to grow it then use it as a front greenery for some of your taller flowers, or simply mix in the flower beds. Makes a good companion crop for Tulip bed. Have Hosta's, plant it with them and people will not even know that it doesn't belong there. Very shallow root system so doesnt really take away from other plants. jim

Couple of years ago, we had a lovely watermelon vine appear in a flowerbed by the back of the garage. The kids evidently while outside eating watermelon had a spitting contest. That vine produced the sweetest watermelons we've ever grown, guess they liked the rotted manure, compost, and potting soil that has been building up over the years in that flower bed. The neighbors thought it was a hoot.

I have planted lettuce for three or four years now.Lettuce does need light to germinate, so do not burry the seeds. I have to keep reminding myself of that. I will sprinkle a little dirt/compost over the seeds. I am always a afraid birds with clean them out. I planted red sails and black jack. Both green and red. I liked the black jack better. Not from a taste stand point. But during and post harvest the black jack seemed to hold up better. The red sail seemed to wilt very quickly.

Rhubarb should go out as soon as possible. This is it's growing season. Choose a type that claims to be slow to bolt. In choosing lettuces, I look for variety in color and different maturity dates so the harvest lasts longer. I don't plant iceberg at all - I've heard that it's on the low end of the scale for food value, and hard to grow well. Plant lettuces now, and again in two or three weeks, and then again the first week of August for a fall crop. After you dig in the hay/manure so it's mixed well with your soil, plant the first batch of seed as soon as possible. If you plant the second batch where it gets a little mid day shade, it will do well even after the weather turns hot in June. Lettuce doesn't like summer in Iowa unless it gets some mid day shade and plenty of water. One bit of advice for anything you plant -- read the directions and do what it says on the package. Sounds simple, but that's the most reliable way to learn.

Our favorite is trout's back, but I also grow red sails, bibb and Grand Rapids as well as a mesclun mix.

I grow romaine, bibb, black seeded simpson, and mesclun mix.

Thanks, I will look for these.

Jim, if I planted it among my plants, the critters would think I was inviting them in for a tasty buffet. :)

How do you who grow lettuce keep the critters at bay?
Last year they got my kale and it was in my driveway - I didn't even know til then that we have a possum.

Jim, I love the idea of planting lettuce with spring bulbs, think I'll try that this spring.
I haven't grown a lot of different varieties but I really like Bibb. Makes nice little heads.
