Since the lettuce is happily growing there, can I leave it and harvest when ready?? Will I get good tasting lettuce from it?? It was either 'Black Seeded Simpson' or 'Buttercrunch'

Don't know if they will grow true to form, since you had two types. Should be edible, so go ahead and see what you get.

it will be quite edible. My neighbor has a permanent cherry tomato and lettuce bed. He does nothing except weed and fertilize (he does not even fertilize, just throws something his horses produce in there, once a year). they reseed with abandon and come back every year.

Yes! I went out to clean up my lettuce/spinach bed (and plant out some wintersown babies), only to find that my bed was half full of volunteers.

I was afraid they would be horrible, so I tasted them. I did, and they were great!

Two more weeks and we will be having all the salad we can stand! Yumm!

I had this happen too, but instead of the reseeded stuff growing in the bed where it's parent plants were growing, it grew outside the bed..I also had turnip greens that reseeded IN MY LAWN..I kid you not. we left it uncut for most of the winter and I was able to cut it a few different times. It was not the turnip that grows a root, but the one's you grow for the top..cant think of their name.

I've got mystery seedlings popping up in the spot where I started a compost pile. The rest of the compost has been relocated, and I am waiting for these seedlings to show me some true leaves so I can tell what they are.

Couple of years ago, we had a lovely watermelon vine appear in a flowerbed by the back of the garage. The kids evidently while outside eating watermelon had a spitting contest. That vine produced the sweetest watermelons we've ever grown, guess they liked the rotted manure, compost, and potting soil that has been building up over the years in that flower bed. The neighbors thought it was a hoot.

I've got a lot of some kind of mustard with red leaves coming up (something that came in mesclun), plus what seems to be true-to-form Red Russian kale and White Russian kale. And then there are a few plants of what might be some kind of cross between them. It's a little hard to tell still, because the plants are still tiny. But it'll be interesting to see what it ends up being.

I can't get rid of Romaine! I unwittingly let it bolt and now I have Romaine where I planted it and several places where I didn't. Fortunately, the chickens like it. I'm slowly getting it back to where it should be.

Those are lovely heDs of lettuce they have bden there all yeayear and after growing on now is it safe to eat them
