Leaves turning yellow on several varities of roses

We have red knockouts, yellow carefrees and some 1 year old roses which were taken from my grandparents' 30-40+ year old rose (pink is all I know) in it's last gasp.

All the roses have done well until last week. On Sunday we put some water soluble all purpose fertilizer on them. All have about 1/2 of their leaves yellowing now.

All the roses continue to bloom and grow well.

Additionally, temperatures have been 95 plus in our part of southeast Georgia this week.

In the past, I have seen many plants' leaves turn yellow when they had too much water.

Can anyone speculate as to the problem and/or remedy here?

I'm also in Georgia and am seeing this, mostly on the older and lower leaves. I'm just removing them. They aren't diseased, but they look bad. I am seeing nice new growth on top, so that's a good sign. I think it's just the result of the cool very wet spring we had and then jumped into this hot hot summer. My roses are in a lull now after the flush and I've fertilzed so I hope to see another flush in a few weeks.

If it was caused by over-fertilizing, you would likely find dry brown burnt areas around the edges of the leaves. This might be caused by applying any fertilizer to the foliage during very hot weather, or by inaccurate mixing that delivered much more than the labeled dose to the roots. Hose-end sprayers may not be very accurate.

If no that, you should post clear pictures or a careful description of the yellowing. Where on the plant? (new growth, old leaves, shaded interior leaves). What pattern on the leaf? Any spots? Contrast with the veins?

Don't worry. It's just transplant shock. I had the same problem last Sept when they were just planted. Now they are blooming with shinny green leaves. I have several of "Pink supreme", "white", "scarlet" flower carpets. Only one of the "white" flower carpets got a bit of powdery mildew last winter. They are such tough plants and easily to root. I dropped some cuttings to entertain my very busy toddler. Now I have several new plants!

He's also a very, very knowledgeable rosarian. We are very lucky to have Baldo. Go to: http://www.sactorose.org/rosebug/index.htm Check out ABIOTIC diseases of roses, and scroll down until you find CHLOROSIS. That's what your iron deficiency would look like. If that's not what you were seeing -- Iron wasn't the right answer. I believe I would cut (or snap) off the bud. Keep the plant from drying out, and see what happens. Jeri

Often suggested is to look in older threads for information Old threads come back to surface ( like this one ) is probably the result of following a suggestion. Anyhoo ( & ironic) 2011( maybe 2010) was the Apx starting year that certain plants had separated from the C&S plant forum. Sometimes the roses are just not in very good shape when you get them. I picked up one 2 years ago. After a while I noticed it wasn't doing very well. When I finally took the time too check it I found the problem on mine. It was chip budded thats what I think it is called. Anyway up by the budded spots were lots go little galls the rose was doomed. At least I was able to take it back. It is hard to say what is wrong but it could be that the roots have not have not stretched out yet. Sometimes the roots are all bound up in the pot when you buy them. Did you loosen up the roots before planting. If not the roots are not able to grow out of the pot shape and has a difficult time taking up water. Maybe someone will have another idea for you.

I also noticed some yellowing on some of my roses yesterday. I was really bothered by this, since they have for the most part been looking really nice this year. So I decided to take a few examples down to S&W to see what they thought. Jeff told me that it wasn't anything to worry about, that it was just a magnesium or iron deficiency due to all the rain that we have had. I was so relieved! (So relieved that I ended up buying 5 more roses, LOL)

Thanks very much for the replies. I went by after Church today. All the roses are nearly back to normal.

I pretty much believe it was a combination of the severe heat and perhaps a little too much of the fertilizer.

Sorry I didn't have the opportunity to take pictures. I'll try to round up my camera next weekend when I am down and get some pictures.

I need to try to find out what type the old roses are.

I'm seeing the same thing with the yellow leaves. Yesterday I took the water hose to help them fall off the bush.

I've seen the same thing on some of my roses. Nothing serious, and usually only a few of the very bottom leaves that are actually touching the ground. It seems to happen after unusually heavy (but brief)rains....and most often after several days of them. I think it may just be water related. Seems to clear right up after the weather does.
