In Praise of Golden Weeping Willow Trees--Pictures
Comments (23)Golden weeping willows are not long lived. I don't have any hard data, but I think at 100 yeasrs, or a few years earlier, they will begin to deteriorate. It depends on the site and some other factors. My favorite "legacy" trees, are the eastern white oak, and the baldcypress. Both of these are underplanted. I think Oikos Tree Crops has the golden weeping willow, but they offer several other willows, so be sure you get the right one--the second paragraph of my original post includes the names I have seen it sold under. But if you can find one nearby, you can easily propagate them from cuttings--there are different methods, and I think they all work. Here in the Winchester area there are not many around--most weeping willows are either the Babylon weeping willow, which can be a fine tree also, but I don't like it nearly as much as the golden. And there are one or two other cultivars "out there." If you find one with twigs as golden as those in my pictures, that's the one. Some others have some yellowish, or partially golden colored twigs, but unless the golden hue is strong, and goes back up the twigs for two or three years growth, at least, that's not the one you want. --spruce...See MoreOT..In praise of Chives!
Comments (34)Ditto on the Chives, Donn I LOVE my garlic chives. They go into just about everything. Put them in tossed salad, they give them a great taste and look. Put them in potato salad...ditto. Put them in sauce or whatever I stir fry or as part of a marinade...yummm...and they just keep coming all season. I think I need to grow more. You know what else I like that I knew next to nothing about before I WSed it? Lovage. It tastes like a stronger version of celery and it is wonderful in chicken salad, nice in stews or tossed salads...You can use the leaves or the stalks and you just use less of it than celery (the flavor goes a long way). And it's perennial! Linda...See MoreDishwashers, Really worth spending more for quiet?
Comments (6)I believe the top of the line KitchenAid unit does not have a built-in disposal, so the elimination of that alone will make it more quiet. Most European brands also don't include a disposal, such as Miele and Bosch, which allows them to be quite. I'm not sure how much the KA model is you are looking at, but I just got a Miele Diamante G2143SC ($1399) and it is the quietest unit I've every owned (had GE and Electrolux before). The quality if the unit is excellent (made in Germany) and everything comes out clean. Now I know what it means to have a problem-free dishwasher!...See MoreIs Direct Venting more quiet?
Comments (8)~mgood, I spent some time on the phone this morning. The food chain I pursued was Vent-a-Hood > Regional distribution people (who sells to the Builder's contact, who sells to the builder). So I spoke with Regional folks. He said two things: 1.) The pic above is NOT a "Direct Vent" option, and; 2.) That between the Above, and the Direct Vent, that the above depicted option is the quieter of the two. HOWEVER, if you are able to vent straight up & through the roof, THAT is the quietest option of all. Curves make wind noise as we all know. I was unable to take advantage of that straight-up option because we have a room there, and the joists run such that piping between the floor was not feasible. Regional guy said ""We checked the serial number and that his hood is top vent. As we discussed top vent is quieter due to the fact that the 8" round duct off the top is 10.5" tall and air likes to move in a round pattern. The VentAHood Back Vent Requires a VP561 Back Vent Elbow that is 7" Tall and is through a rectangle which will cause the air flow to be louder."" Hope that helps!! MY CHIEF COMPLAIN IS WITH THE BUILDER'S REPRESENTATIVE COMPANY which is a Northern Virginia company called ABW - Appliance Builder's Warehouse. Their rep left the company last week, and as far as I am concerned, communicating with him was like tossing coins into an abyss. He was horrendous, never Replied, never answered questions, never offered ANY information, never followed up, and basically was merely a comission vortex. And my Ovens are now the wrong color when he had 8 MONTHS to figure that one out, and when asked DIRECTLY about this Vent situation, he dodged, said he was working on the direct vent option, then I never heard another thing until it was installed. I am SO GLAD to know that he went back to some Electrical sales job, but I hear that his replacement is worse. Matt Kiser - you were horrible!! I certainly hope you are better in your new job. Soon as we get closed, I fully expect to communicate with Management of that company, or key stakeholders, and let them know that they have a massive deficit on their front lines (with one exception - there was a gal there completely on her game. have no idea why she's not able to interface). Seriously.........See Morehoovb zone 9 sunset 23
