For me, they multiply at least 2x in the ground per year. There is no reason to "peel them". If you have a sack of them, how many more do you want (-: I have recently developed a theory on them and you will undoubtedly get different opinions. I plant them at least 6" deep from the top of the bulb. As they grow, they will reproduce at the preferred level. Some people claim they can physically move in the soil but I doubt it. (That would be scary...) The reason I set them extra deep is that the plant has two sets of roots. Those that extend from the bottom of the bulb which you should never remove and those that sprout above the bulb on the stalk that it sends up. My theory is that the upper root system has to have enough growing space to help the flowers perform. When I allow for this space, they grow much taller. I have seen this effect over the years when deliberately plant two sets in each environ. Two sets full sun, one high the other one deep. The same goes for partial shade and heavy shade. Granted both plants perform according to the amount of sunlight but the deeper ones always seem to grow taller. In case you have the dreaded red-lily beetle: I spray with a systemic insecticide (Bionide 5 in one?) twice a week apart as the stalk is growing. DO NOT use this when the buds show at all. This way the pollen in the flowers will not be toxic to the bees and other pollinators. It is worth continuing treatment after all flowers are spent as it helps reduce next year's infestation. Use a hand spritzer to place the insecticide on the lily leaves and not surrounding plants.

Hi Lisa! I have Tiger Lilies (that my neighbor also gave me a few years ago) along the east side of the house. The area probably gets even less sun than yours because of nearby shrubs. They seem to do fine out there. I don't think these lilies are very fussy. Have you ever noticed those little black 'beads' on the leaf right by the stem? Those are miniature bulbs. If you plant those in the ground they will sprout. I have a few popping up around the base of the parent plant. Very cool! PS. I have also read that Tiger Lilies should not be planted next to other lilies becasue they carry a virus that can mutate other lilies. I planted mine in an isolated spot. CMK

Don't have the true tiger lilies personally (they grow wild here and are the ones with the little bulblets or whatever they are called, helps them repro faster, NOT the ditch lilies which I don't like). Anyway, when naturalized in mass plantings, they don't look too bad leaning, looks rather nice actually, have posted this photo before. One nice thing about them apart from covering difficult spots is that they get so thick they tend to crowd out most weeds and grass and require no care whatsoever once established. When not blooming, the foliage looks better than bare, tall grass or whatnot. Where I saw these they are on a northern exposure slope, entirely covered with them for many square yards, and they all lean out enough so they can catch the eastern and western sun, really a pretty sight. I had asked for some, the husband said I could, wanted to wait until fall to dig about 6, then there was an issue regarding me, and they were all sprayed, hardly one left. Couple years later, they are all back better than ever. I'll get some from someone else or buy if I figure out a good place to plant them where they can spread.

As mentioned by Suenh, Tiger lilies are resistant to most lily virus, such as TBV and the cucumber Mosiac Virus. However, they can still host the virus inside them and this virus can be spread by gardening tools (cutting flowers on both lilies, one after the other) or by insects (primarily aphids). If you have an asiatic lily with virus it typically displays symptoms which allow you to cull it. However, with tiger lilies, you may not know that it has virus since it does not display any symptoms and the only hint may be lilies gradually getting infected and dying around it (or near it). That being said, I grow tiger lilies and have not had a problem. I am rather virgillant about aphid control and I dip tools in a bucket with 10% bleach solution (9 parts water to 1 part bleach) between each cut when I deadhead flowers. Just because you have not had problems, does not mean it can not become a problem in future, and having a "trojan horse" in a garden could eventually become a problem, especially if you are a lily collector. If you are a casual gardener, it is certainly worth the risk because with some regular sound care you can keep all lilies happily growing and if you have a really bad year, worst case replant some lilies (including the tiger lily). Personally, I hate to get rid of them because they are so pretty and it goes against everything I believe it when you get rid of the lily which is virus resistant to protect the lilies that are susceptible for virus infection.
