How can you tell if you've got a trailer?

I have a pink mini Noid given to me by a friend - I'm sure it was from a box store. The way it's growing makes me thing it is a trailer. How can you tell? The flowers seem a lot "looser" than in my other AVs. Kind of airy.

What do you think?

Hi Mo,

Trailers have multiple crowns, not just suckers, on the main stem and have many stems or branches. Can you post a photo so that we can see. Is it because of the way the violet is growing, or because of the blossoms, or both? If it is just the flower's growth habits without any other trailer traits, it may not be one, unless it is quite young.

They are neat violets and I will try to take a pic of one I have in the next day or two and get it posted. I hope yours is one!

Mo, the chances are *very* high that you have regular plant. Trailers are something of a specialty item, and the big nurseries don't bother; to them, Avs are quick, cheap color.

Kay,I am with Rita.Don't feel guilty, Feel Blessed and grateful that you still have your life and your family.Its terrible whats happened to all of these people.It will take them a long time to rebuild if they decide thats what they want to do, but, some may just decide to move some where else,and start over.My town has a van and a big tractor trailer parked almost in the middle of town, taking anything that people can give,preferably all new things to be brought there to help all them folks,thats lost everything they own.My prayers go out to them,that they will make it ok. I planted not one but two of these in March, and am happy to say after a little tweaking with the system, they're working wonderfully. First things first: I passed on tomatoes, peppers, and any other large summer veggies & fruits because (a) I was already planning another area for them and (b) this is much better suited to what I had in mind, salad greens. Now at first I made a couple mistakes; the mix I made up was TOO good at draining. It needed water daily, even in this moist S. Oregon spring. Secondly, I packed way too much in the containers. And third, I didn't put it where it could get enough sun. It was also a little early in the year. So after watching my veggie seedlings die off one by one (save for the first row, the one that got the most sun), I replanted, single plant to a pocket, added a drip line over both (I wasn't going to re-soil every pocket!), and put a wooden brace that angles the bottom out from the fence I hung these contraptions on. A month later and it's doing great; spinach (LOTS of spinach :), lettuce, swiss chard, chives, parsley, mustard, bok choi ... it's a veritable salad bar. Definitely give this a try if you're considering it. My only problem was finding the dang shoe caddies; I finally got the pair at Ross for $5 each, but haven't seen any since. They have to be the mesh-like material; plastic will rot away.

Aluminum cooking utensils, aluminum foil and pots and pans do not cause Alzheimer's Disease. Tami, if Alzheimer's Disease runs in your family there is most likely a genetic link. From the day my Mom was diagnosed I have read anything and everything I could get my hands on about Alzheimer's Disease (one of the reasons I got the internet) and there is nothing that links aluminum from cooking utensils as a cause. If you are worried about ingesting aluminum stop drinking water, stop taking Tylenol, stop taking antacids and stop drinking tea or even wearing antiperspirants. Here is link to a Government of Canada website in regards to aluminum and human health. In my research and book reading on Alzheimer's Disease the first comment ever made linking aluminum from cooking utensils and foil was by researcher/scientist telling a joke at a cocktail party - somebody overheard the words "aluminum foil" and "Alzheimer's" and the word was spread that aluminum pots and pans cause Alzheimer's Disease. I'd replace the faucet unit with one that was designed for outdoor showers, pool houses, etc, (Chicago Faucets make a good one) that doesn't have the Thermostatic Balance feature. Overtemp Safety devices that screw on at the shower head are made to prevent scalding water accidents. Also, install low-point drains in the supply lines so the water can be drained in cold months.

(yes, I'm giving this site another chance!, the "green ads" are gone, but I'm still not sure if it's them or something I did to my comp, but I'll check this post out from an internet cafe tomorrow, just to see)

The only thing I've noticed specific about trailers is that usually, you can see the new crown forming at the same time, the plant is putting up a bloom stalk (above the same leaf). Regular av's often sucker after the bloom stalk has been removed, trailers tend to put blooms and sucker in the same spot at the same time. Hope it helps.

Thanks everybody. I think it's probably not a trailer. It is very young, and the "open" flower habit made me think it might be, but hey - it's pretty either way.

Mo,

I had the same question as you at one time--until....

I have noticed that trailers do develop a long stem quicker then other varieties. And this stem will produce multiple crowns(again with longer then usual stems), and they tend to lie flat rooting as they go...that last example is a biggie in the identification.
