20 hp Conquest - Single Stage or 2 Stage Blower

well the 20 yr old snapper 7hp walk behind blower isn't getting it done anymore so what do I go with the 42 inch single or 2 stage blower for my Conquest?

We had a foot of snow last night and it took me 2hrs to clear a 90 ft drive, and turn around area with the old walk behind blower and I have kinda had it.

We got 17 inches of wet & sticky snow a few days ago, and it took me about 2 hours to clear our sidewalks & driveway with our Ariens walk-behind snowblower. I think it was the snow, not the machine, that made it take so long. There were places where the snow was packed down, and the snowblower went right over, leaving two inches of compressed snow. I finally got all of this up, chipping away by hand, the other day. Our snowblower has steel auger blades, and it is only two years old. Maybe you need a new blower, maybe not....

Once you ride and blow you'll NEVER walk behind again...

Single stage: lighter, less moving parts, less expensive, learning curve to match ground speed to blower feed, high speed auger more dangerous and requires respect, throws rocks and gravel really well.

Two stage: heavier, more parts so more complicated, slow speed auger safer, more expensive, excels in deep snow.

Everyone has an opinion on which is better. I've had them both on two different GTs and both did a great job. Make you decision based on availability and cost but get a blower at least as wide as the rear wheels of the GT so you're clearing a path the tractor can travel.

Y'all definitly just get you a good brand, yea Carrier and Rheem/Trane are the top AC/Heatpump brands out there. Carriers generally are a little pricey in my opinion, but there also good quality. You can never go wrong with a Rheem or a Trane. One brand to avoid is Goodman, there cheap and they don't last. Some may have good stories about them, but generally they should be avoided. Yea a 2 stage would probably be best. Yea I also say its a bit undersized, but 105 Degrees is real hot! BUT if its properly sized these conditions should be taken into account, which is why you usually go a little bit bigger than you really need.

Thanks for the comments tigerdunes. We've been over this quite a bit already. The pricing is average for the North East....labor rates tend to be quite high and the $600 rebate makes the price of the furnaces excellent. I obviously have two stage thermostats and the sizes of the furnaces were decided after heat loss calculations. I live in an older home in a cold climate and my calculations were within 10% of my contractor's. The calculation for my two floor unit came in at 75kBTUs. The contractor initially wanted to install a 100kBTU unit, but I talked him down to 80kBTU. The furnace for the renters below me is a bit large, but it was the smallest two stage available from American Standard. I thought about installing a 92% efficient 40kBTU single stage furnace with selectable motor speed, but as the 60kBTU two stage with variable speed motor was the same price after the rebate I went with that one.so that both furnaces essentially the same and to get the variable speed blower. I imagine having the second stage will also be nice on very cold mornings.

"The biggest cost in operating a furnace is the electricity that a fan uses. " I think your math is waay off. Read Mike's description above for what a multistage system offers. He prefers them, I personally don't but i also don't live in a humid summer climate. If I did, I might share his view. Here's an example for the money calculation. - My furnace's blower seems to be between 500-600 watts. Let's be generous and round it up to 1000 watts. Operating for one hour would be 1 kilowatt hour, which at my top tiered rate is 30 cents. Remember we rounded up. And in most parts of the US, this number averages about 15 cents and can be much less. My furnace is 120K btu/hr, input. Let's round that DOWN to 100K btu/hr. At the top tier, I pay over $1.50 per therm (which is 100 btus) but lets round that down too to $1.20. Operating my furnace for one hour costs $1.20 for gas, 30 cents for electricity. The real electricity number is less because I rounded up, and the real gas number is more because i rounded down. Did I get something wrong?

I'm also in the Bay Area and presume the OP has PG+E as I do. Gas and electricity charges are tiered by order of the PUC, a so-called "baseline" allowance for the first small tranche and then the "excess" rate. For me, the baseline is enough for water heating and cooking and was $1.19 per therm on my last few bills. The next tier, immediately reached in any month when heat is used, is $1.75. Yeah, it's high, compared to rates elsewhere in the country. I replaced two systems a few years ago. The HVAC contractor recommended sticking with 80% furnaces because he said there would be no payback for the incremental cost of more efficient ones, so that's what I did. I guess it depends on how warm one keeps the house during the winter. We tend to stick to the high 60s, with daytime and nighttime setbacks, and in a larger house than this one. I don't think I've ever spent as much as $750 per year on heating and it's usually less. To save 10-15% isn't going to get me very far any time soon. Also, because of the mild temperatures, single stage units seem to be the most common. HERS testing is required for all HVAC equipment replacement and installation jobs. It's basically testing by a 3rd party, not the HVAC contractor, for duct leakage and requires reasonably easily located holes be patched. For my job, I had them do a complete rehab and reinsulating of my old hard duct system anyway, and in advance, so the HERS testing was a non-event. But it does cost about $1K.

I have an 06 Conquest with a single stage 42" blower that works just fine. My drive is a little over 1100 feet so a walk behind, which I have from our previous home, does take forever!

Of course, wouldn't you know it with the last storm, the belt for the blower broke just as I was finishing up. Fortunately I have a spare that will go on this week, I hope.

Thanks for the input, I ordered the 42 inch 2 stage. I was a bit surprised that the cost of the unit didn't include the mounting brackets that go onto the frame, but I will get over that.
