Just had to get one... Varigated Norway

I've never seen one in person, never found a nursery that offers one. I first heard of this tree when I saw Ken's Photos and loved it. I have no idea where to plant it. When I heard of a somewhat local nursery that had them, the first price I saw for them was kind of high but I was tempted. I talked to them today, and they offered it to me for a price I could not pass up. I was on the road headed to get one 10 minutes later. I had to drive 2 hours to get it.

There was a bit of rabbit damage around the graft, but it is mostly healed and looking good. Roots at surface look good not girdled. He guaranteed it. I paid $20.

I absolutely love it! I wish it could stay right where it is so I could look at it out the kitchen window all the time. (I wonder if he could graft one of these variegated onto a more restrictive root stock like Korean? to limit it's size so it could be grown in locations with less space)

It's an awesome specimen tree, no one else anywhere around here has anything like it.

He has the princton gold maples too -- I love those also.

He also has some bloodgood's that look really nice, he has been growing them there, and he grafted them onto Korean root stock so they are more hardy. I was going to give up on Japanase maples after my Crimpson Princess died this year, but since his are grown locally and proven hardy, I'm tempted to try one, they are healthy and pretty full, around 5' tall $48.

Picked up a 4' sugar maple for $12 too, since they are pretty shade tolerant, I think I can find a spot for it.

mine started as a mail order 4 foot whip.. 10 years later.. its about 12 feet high ... it is not super aggressive on my sand.. and never watered .. after the first two years ...

so plant it where it will make your toes tingle.. and if in 5 or 10 years it bothers you.. get rid of it..

life is too short to plant it where you cant see it.. dont you think

Yeah the Growing Citrus and about another half dozen popular guides, coffee-table style booklets, etc are not in depth enough. I'm ready to order Biology of Citrus. I'm hoping it will answer all my *very specific* technical questions I have been unable to find in research articles ... of course I'm dreaming. At least I'm hoping it will fill the missing knowledge gaps and perhaps identify how citrus DIFFER from other foliage, especially other fruit trees. I'm hoping it's as technical as The Citrus Industry Volumes (of which the first two volumes are now free online at http://lib.ucr.edu/agnic/webber/). Every once in a while I do a search for the whole collection of the Citrus Industry, but it's just so darn expensive.

Clare, I have but only when it was a light sourdough, not one with a strong sour dough flavour. That wouldn't appeal to me. Annie1971, this is the recipe I used for the Chocolate Bread. We use Dutch-process cocoa instead of the more usual natural cocoa to give the bread a richer brown color. Prep: 20 minutes plus rising Bake: 20 minutes Makes 2 loaves, 12 slices each 1/4 cup warm water (105 to 115 degrees F) 1 package active dry yeast 3 teaspoons granulated sugar about 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1/3 cup unsweetened Dutch-process cocoa 1/3 cup packed brown sugar 1 3/4 teaspoons salt 1 cup freshly brewed coffee, cooled until warm (105 to 115 degrees F) * 4 tablespoons butter or margarine,softened 1 large egg, separated 3/4 cup dried tart cherries * 3 squares (3 ounces) bittersweet chocolate, coarsely chopped * 1 teaspoon water In cup, combine warm water, yeast, and 1 teaspoon granulated sugar; stir to dissolve. Thanks Ken! I'm glad to hear it moves a bit slower. I think I am going to put it next to the herb garden so I see it right out the kitchen window. A couple feet over from it is a bush called Rosemary Salix, it is a pretty blueish green that resembles rosemary. Since it's in the salix family, I'm sure it will handle heavy pruning just fine and I will be able to keep it at a size that compliments this tree. I think it will be a nice color next to the variegated maple.

Sitting there is it's pot currently, but will go plant shortly, need to get stuff planted today, suppose to be 108 tomorrow with the heat index, yikes!

I hope I never come accross one because I have nowhere to put it ;)

... is it crazy to clear half an acre just to plant the trees I like? I have been thinking about this lately. I might make room for it after all :)

Good luck with the heat Jamie! It is out in force so early this year. I have a couple trees in pots sitting on the back patio cause if this June is any indication, I need to wait until fall to plant anything else.

let me yell ... NOBODY PLANTS FULLY LEAFED OUT TREES IN THE HIGH HEAT OF SUMMER ... unless your only goal it to go buy another ...

if you have decent soil ... [NOT CLAY] ... just plant pot and all.. and bare root and plant it properly in late september.. when all the other trees are turning colors ...

JUST BECAUSE YOU BUY IT IN SUMMER.. DOESN'T MEAN YOU HAVE TO PLANT IT IN SUMMER ....

if you have bad drainage ... then put the pot in bright shade ... until fall.. when you can plant it on a berm ...

again.. i will yell ... NO TREE PLANTING IN JULY AND AUGUST ...

Gasp!!! There is one tree on there that I'm in utter shock of for its size and price. Now I might have to go for a two hour drive! Here I am freaking growing a 6" plant!

Shoot. I didn't read this till after I planted it. It was 80 today. We have a lot of clay, but it does drain unless our ground is really saturated. I didn't bare root it, but broke off most of the soil and made sure the roots were not tangled up, then planted it in the normal soil, mulched, and watered.

Now that you say this, I seem to remember you warning me about summer planting last summer.

Dang, I screwed up.. Think I just leave it, water it properly and hope for the best? or do I try to move it back to the pot?

It was the slowest soil I'd ever seen in a nursery pot, must have had clay in. Took several minutes for standing water to drain out from the top of the soil.
