You will likely need to replace the flywheel. I do not recall being able to replace the ring gear on that series but it may have been a service part at one time. Are older machines readily available for parts in your area?

Well, i found that the ring gear is not furnished when buying a new flywheel! That was back in the time when that type engine was used. So, they must have sold the ring gear too. But now, with further work today, i find there is no spark to the plug, or anywhere else.
Being that this machine is long in the tooth, maybe the owner might want to invest in a newer one. I'll call him tomorrow and converse with him.
I did get the engine to crank with the electric starter, but its noisy!
Only one other problem--the durn thing is in my garage under the house, with a foot of snow and 60 ft. between the door and the street. My main problem will be how to get it up into my truck to take it back! Woe--And to think--i have a good running blower under the deck behind the house, but no way to get it inside! WOE!! Maybe it'll start up tomorrow! YO!

rustyj14, Reading of your problem, I wondered if the ring gear could be removed, Then turned over such that the other side of the gear teeth would mesh with the starter.

Even if possible, it might not be worth doing since the engine has other problems.

Since yesterday, when i found that the "sparks" had left the engine, and i couldn't find them laying anywhere on the floor, I rechecked all connections, to no avail!
I conversed with the owner, and he said to stop any more work on it, keep it for my troubles, and junk it if i didn't want to keep it. This man is a good customer, so i will probably get rid of it, although i'll keep the starter. Its much too old to go investing a lot of gold in it.
Could an electronic ignition kit be installed on the engine, an H50 or H60 Tecumseh, points under flywheel. I think thats where they are--i can't find them any other place. I'm not well versed on the older Tec engines and the repairs of same. I got into this work thru lawn mower engines, etc., but not the really old models!

I remember back in the 70's putting ring gears on HM80's- they came with the 12V starter kits? I don't really remember. Maybe they did on the med frames too. Somebody somewhere likely has one and has now idea what it fits- that's the kicker. Yes the Tecumseh points and condensor are under the flywheel. .020 gap. You could try cleaning the points quick if you don't have any. At least that would confirm your coil is good. I think you can put those Oregon electronic kits on these if you desire.

Yes, a friend in Wisconsijn saw my messages, and wrote saying he has some of those electronic ignition kits, so i asked him to send me one!
And, after writing and asking for a kit---another guy called and said he had a Craftsman tracked snow blower he wants to sell! So, i went to look at it, found out the price he wants for it, and am going to show it to the man tomorrow, or Monday. The tracked machine looks almost new, it runs and throws snow, tracks are fine, starts right up, electric start! Looks to have very low time on it. I think the original owner wasn't able to handle it, so he set it out for the garbage man, whence my friend came along, and loaded it up. In our Borough, anything sitting out the night before garbage pickup day is fair game. But, it must have a bag of garbage with it, or they won't take it. Then along come us Bin-divers, we separate the wheat from the chaff, load it up and away it goes, to line my pockets, and others, too.
But---I was checking the throw aways one night, when i spied a ratty old mower setting beside a garbage can, so being a confirmed bin-diver, i loaded it up and took it home. Before going home, i stopped to see my friends at the fire hall, and showed them my find. Somebody remarked it was still warm, but i just laughed, and went on home.
The next week, at the same house, there was their kid out in the yard, mowing away with a used mower, with a grass catcher on it. And, a garbage can sitting nearby, where he was dumping in the grass from the bagger!
OOOOPPPS!!

LOL. You thievin' s.o.b. That is funny. Bet the kid does not leave the mower unattended again.

Just to show you i'm not really dishonest, one evening, i was out checking the things being thrown away and there sat a really nice, clean, Craftsman push mower, bag and all, beside the peoples' garbage pile! So, i rang the doorbell, the guy came out, i asked if he was throwing the mower away and he looked at me like i was some kind of "nut"! He said no, he had just gone inside to go whiz! I then informed him to never set something out by the curb, beside a garbage can, especially on Sunday night, in his neighborhood, because the bin divers will grab it and leave. Most of those guys have no scruples, but i do!
Then again, there's the stupid father who let his kid take out the trash, and he threw away a brand new Homelite weed wacker, a toboggan, and some other things! Guess the kid didn't like to do any work around the home!
And, i found a nice Homelite weed wacker standing in a garbage can on trash night. The string head was missing-the rest ok. Still using that one!

I consider myself to be honest too, but anybody who leaves there tools/equipment by the garbage can at the curb on garbadge night DESERVES to loose them. I wouldn't shed any tears.

Rusty, I know you are honest, I was just giving you a hard time. When I was a kid, my dad made a cart out of my old tricycle to haul pails of water to the chicken coop which was near the road. I guess I forgot to wheel it back as it disappeared, after that I had to carry the pails. Grrr. I hated those chickens, at least until they were roasted and on my plate with gravy.

Yes, canguy, i had an old baby carriage that i found setting out with the trash. Had 3 sections, fenders, a sun shade, and was convertible to other images of use. I tried selling it at the local flea market, but to no avail. So, i took it apart and made a garbage can hauler out of it. 'Bout 5 years later, a friend of my wife stopped in. She spied my cart, gasped and said that thing was a real antique, and did i have the rest of the pieces! No, i didn't have them any more! Oh gosh, then she said if i had all the parts, she'd have given me $100 for it!I use it when i go away to our Wintertime Bluegrass Festival, at a motel in Butler, Pa. every winter. Great for hauling coolers, suitcases, and instruments down the halls to my room! And, the man in Wisconsin sent the electronic ignition, all i have to do is install it. Thats after i get two tractors out of my garage, and get them delivered.
