Pop's Toro Electric Start Problem

I had posted about Pop's 4 year old Toro (which I believe he added electric start too after year 1 OR it came with it not sure) and the fact that it would not start via the electric start or by pulling the rope. I actually did eventually get it going but saw a spark shoot out the exhaust. Well he took it in for a $65 service and it runs well now BUT they removed the electric start (no charge) and showed him how the gears were all chewed up. They want $351 for a new one...no thanks!

How could this happen? I know he did not lay on the starter long. In fact the thrower has relatively few hours on it over 4 years. Also a piece of plastic on the housing was cracked.

I was VERY disapointed in the Toro quality for this component.

Funny how it $100 upgrade to get the electric start new and $351 to replace it.
