Linda hi again, remember I told you I move my violets from a full western exposure to a north western one well look what's happening.this is the violet that was reaching well the leaves are now going flat I will send you three more pics to look at the others, the first is a side view of the same plant leaves going down, the second of two that the leaves keep hugging the pots. These two only get northern exposure and the last one is of my Warm summer sunshine, its leaves were up in the air but now they are also going down. From the leaf colour I know they are not getting too much sun, the amount they get is very filtered so what going on? Could you please tell me. Velleta

LINDA, these are the two which seem to love hugging the pot, they are the two same plant exactly. And they are also the ONLY two that does this when I bought the first one the leaves hug the pot also, so I went to a show and bought a second one younger this time and the same thing has happen, the older of the two is the one hugging the pot the most. Bt this is the only problem with them they are healthy otherwise as you can see. Velleta

Bcb, check the FAQ on the forum's main page, and the link below for all the cultural info you could ever want. I'm not sure what you mean by 'mohawk', but they do appear to be overpotted. AVs like to be snug in their pots; the ratio is the diameter of the pot should equal 1/3 the diameter of the plant. So a 9 inch plant should be in a 3 inch pot. You might want to change your soil, too. The other ratio; 1 part peat (or coconut coir, my favorite), 1 part perlite, 1 part vermiculite, and a little horticultural charcoal to keep it fresh. This is a very light mix that AVs enjoy, and so will you as it helps prevent root rot, making it more difficult to overwater. When you plant, don't tamp the soil down; spoon it in the pot and among the roots, tapping the side of the pot to eliminate air pockets, then water and drain thoroughly. Welcome and good luck! Am I understanding this right: You got it two weeks ago It doesn't have any brown or pale spots on the leaves Nothing has turned mushy or floppy It's just quit blooming? Sounds like there is no cause for alarm just yet. Your violet is simply expressing some displeasure at being yanked from the comfy warm, humid greenhouse it spent it's adolescence in. As for automatic/wick watering. That's a trickier question. The idea is to leave the plant on the wick all the time. However, you have to pay close attention to how moist the solid is getting. If it feels soaking wet all the time, chances are you need to change to a lighter medium with more perlite (just mentioning that because optimara plants often come potted in rather dense peat mix). You also want to cut your fertilizer to about half the recommended dosage, and use plain water about 1/4 of the time, to account for evaporation). And in top of it all, every so often, you let the reservoir go dry for a day or two, to give the roots some extra air (I think that was the reason anyways). If you do that though, be sure to water from the top afterwards to make sure the wicks get wet again. What you found referred to at 30 minutes a week, was bottom watering, one type of it anyways. You'd put the pot into a bigger dish full of water up to the soil line, let it soak up for a while (15 minutes are recommended I think), then you let it drain completely, and the plant is well watered for a good while. Whichever way you choose to water (and there are plenty to pick from), figure out what works for you. No two environments or plants are exactly alike. Good luck :-) Karin

looked on the website....interesting...s&s apparently is for sound deadening + fire retardancy. I assume what I have...regular roxul is something I could use...offers fire retardency (though to what degree I could not tell since the link on the website did not work!---hopefully better than fg) and inslulates... Agree? Are you further saying for this roxul to be effective I need to cover the area with a piece of drywall...or its simply less effective without it?

In the search you are about to do, you will be looking at squirrel cage (centrifugal) blowers, so that is good. That in itself is not a guarantee it will be good, as some centrifuge motors are noisy too. I'd look at the family of companies operating under Nutone, Broan, Best-by-Broan, Venmar, etc. as your basic reference for powerful and quiet centrifuge blowers. Duct size is the thing. The bigger the better. You can oversize the duct too, and that is good. Less noise, less resistance, more flow. No question. Often the lowest speeds of many blowers are quiet and make it enjoyable to turn it on and leave it on. The highest speed may be quiet too, in some models; is this a requirement or not? Many people say that they don't care about noise when the highest speed is on, since it is a situation that requires maximum power and nothing else matters for those minutes. The more air you blow out the duct, the more makeup air is needed to replace it. Two things determine whether you normally have makeup air coming into the house naturally: your climate (in some climates you normally close windows for many months of the year), and your building's construction (in older houses there are leaks everywhere so air comes in through the electric receptacles in the wall... and this is bad air not good). Do you have a whole house air exchanger, an HRV or ERV? Your hood's canopy ("sump") should be larger than the 30" it has to cover, and placed low near the cooking. (e.g. 24" above the cook surface). A.) Avoid cross breezes (positioning panels, obstacles, walls, cabinets, doors around the cooktop,) B.) Place the sump as close as possible to the cooktop,. C.) Have a place for smoke to collect inside the sump. (i.e. not to have the bottom of the vent hood be a flat plane where the filter is at the same level as the bottom edge of the hood). D.) Plan where makeup air will come from. In several other forums these topics have been discussed. Compared to what the kitchen forum people say, in the HVAC forum the guys say less CFM is OK. Answering your 1st question is risky since you asked about a "minimum" and this could spark controversy. Do you mean to say minimum for the highest need situation? If so, there is no objective answer. Restaurants need triple the CFM that a residential kitchen needs, just to be operable. To be really safe at home, get a hood fan that shuts down when it sense fire. Then, for the other use of the word "minimum" (lowest speeds): get a variable speed controller. The rated CFM is not your true CFM once installed since it has to push against resistance (duct corners, and length) and in any case this is not the CFM you will use daily, it is the High level which you will use only very rarely. LINDA, last one. This is my favourite(my linda) warm smmer sunshine. As you can see its leaves are also going flat, its healthy and the leaves are big and sort of. I think cup would be the correct word but that's it no other problem. Its been over a week since I move them to their new location, it also has two very small buds that are growing so did I do something, WRONG/RIGHT. Thanks again and I hope one day I will be just like you( well educated about A.V.). Velleta

Your plants are responding to the move. If you look at the centers, they look as though they are coming in nicely. not too tight, not too loose. Keep watching the reaching one and see if it continues to move in this manner. About the ones that are hugging the pot-some varieties naturally grow in this manner. What is the big clue is that both are of the same variety and both are growing this way.

The cupped leaves are also a trait that some varieties have. In fact, if you look at the hybridizer's description of many cupped-leaved varieties, the description 'cupped leaves' will be included.

If you are wondering if a plant is growing correctly, it can sometimes be helpful to do a search for that variety. I usually try to look for photos from violet shows as the exhibited plants must be true to the variety.

Also-when you said they are the exact same plant-remember plants are individuals. Same varieties, although generally the same-flower color, leaf pattern, etc., will exhibit their own unique likes and quirks. This can be from many instances-maybe one never developed a robust root system and the other has. It can also be from the grower who has grown in their unique circumstances. These all will produce a plant with its own growing preferences.

Look at your plants over-all. Do they look good? You can tell a plant that is struggling as compared to a happy one. I think your plants look good and you said yourself they are healthy. You are getting a better eye which will become sharper as you continue to grow. Trust your judgement!

And---you have buds! You must be doing something right! Stay the course!!!

P.S. I noticed on another thread you mentioned talking to your plants. We all do, so don't worry-we won't think you're crazy! I have a friend who plays classical music for his orchids 24/7 and he grows amazing plants!

Again thanks Linda, I feel so happy to know my plants are ok. And YES they all look happy, where I had them before they always look sort of tired and dull now their colours are bright and just by looking on them you see vigor. With your help of course. I am praying my two buds will open, they are suppose to be yellow. :) now I can just watch and encourage them along. P.S. Watch is too modest of a word, I look on them every chance I get. LOL.
