Chipper-Shredder Vibration Injury
Comments (4)I have never suffered nerve damage in either hand from vibration, however, I have had temporary symptoms of nerve incapacity in my hands from bicycle riding. There is a tendency to lean on the hands, and if they are kept in the same position for too long, some of the nerves don't work so well. So far, it has gone away after I got off the bike, and rested for a day or two....See MoreHand Crank Garden Shredder
Comments (3)My stepfather owned one in 1980 and it was pretty useless on leaves. You could probably put 7 leaves in it before it bound all up and had to be cleaned out. Worse was plant matter. Although, I should say, his was the only crank shredder I ever saw and might have been a cheaper model than the ones you've seen....See MoreCraftsman chipper shredder
Comments (12)I recently purchased a used Craftsman chipper shredder on ebay. I am in search of the Manual for this 5hp Model # 247.796890 or a similar model, since the basic machine seems to have been made for a number of years with different hp., tho there are different configurations on the placement of the oil, gas and engine on the body of the machine It is all metal, and worked great the few times I used it. Chopped up a huge pile of brush, and I used the mulch on a nice length of bushes already. The pull-start was hard for me to start, since I am not that strong. It didn't start up yesterday, so I checked the spark plug, and replaced it since it was black and wouldn't clean-up, and filled it with 10w 30w oil as listed on the engine (it was thirsty and took a qt.). Filled the gas tank since it was almost empty with regular. I took off the air cleaner and knocked the dust out as best I could. Still wouldn't turn over, but I do have a hard time, pulling fast enough. Can this machine be converted to an electric start? Are there kits out there? Any trouble-shooting advice would be appreciated. Without the manuals, I am hesitant to try to open it up, and I don't know how to properly clean the air filter, or drain the oil to check for sludge. I was all set to tackle another large pile of branches, and lay the mulch on more bushes, so I was bummed when I couldn't get it to start yesterday. I would prefer to service myself rather than having to take to my local garden repair shop. This is the link to the model: http://cgi.ebay.com/SEARS-CRAFTSMAN-CHIPPER-SHREDDER-5HP-L-K_W0QQitemZ220160583669QQihZ012QQcategoryZ42228QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem. Appreciate all help. Comments (32)It shouldn't take longer than an hour but that depends on the machine you get. I had a large container where I placed the rose cuttings. Once it was filled I took time to run them through the chipper. Normally that would take only about 15 minutes. The container was mounted on legs that raised it to the hight of the feed opening. That way I could just pull the canes into the opening and the action of the chipper would pull them into the blades. Most of all, I could feed many canes at once. The only time it jammed would be if I got in a hurry and attempted to force too much in. A large vinyl trash can was placed at the discharge chute to catch the finished product. I could chip quite a few containers of rose canes before that had to be emptied either into the beds or compost pile. The mulch comes out of the discharge tube quite fast so a container placed there kept the mulch from going all over the place. Notice in the picture that I raised the chipper shredder up on a platform to make it so I could sit down and feed it. Sitting on the ground meant I had to continously bend down to feed it. Look closely at the picture. You can see the leg of the stand I had the large holding container mounted on. Notice it was at the same level as the feeder opening so I could sit and feed it. You can also see the container the finished product went into. This was covered with a screen and an old quilt that kept the mulch and most of the dust contained. The hopper on the top was only good for small items. The opening to the chipper blades was small and would plug up if long canes were used. I found it easier to feed through the alternate opening in the rear ....See Morecthornton
