Something is attacking my rose bush! HELP :)

HI All,

Something seems to be eating my rose bush.. take a look below, not sure what the problem is as I can't find anything that looks like this in my Ortho Problem Solver book...I'm thinking it's Roseslugs.. If you agree.. any idea how to treat???

Might be rose slugs.

But...has anything been sprayed or applied to the leaves? Any fertilizers, fish emulsions, insecticides? Water on the leaves?

Unless it's widespread, I wouldn't worry about it. This is probably a caterpillar of one of many moths that could be to blame. This happens to my fruit trees all the time and I kill the caterpillars when I find them, but the damage is so minimal I don't worry about it. I suggest you go out and see how many you can find and kill them by hand, and forget about the rest. Although, I'm no expert on blueberries and I live on the west coast, so take what I say with a grain of salt. I don't think insecticidal soap will bother them, especially protected inside their little tents. I also suspect that this same insect would not be a problem for your raspberries and certainly not the fig.

This happens to my roses like 2x a year. I cannot explain what causes them to form this way, but it seems to affect many different varieties and usually around the same time. Some varieties (elegant fairy tale, sugar moon, mr Lincoln)are more prone to it than others. I live in south Fl so cold or frost damage is certainly not the culprit. I read once that too much alfalfa can cause this to happen, and I think there is a coorolation because one year I used copious amounts of Rose Tone (which contains Alfalfa) and that was the year that I had it the worst. (I no longer use rose tone and I've seen a significant decline). Not to say that Rose Tone is bad, I believe it to be a good product, but I used it in pots and perhaps it was too concentrated. Have any if you seen a cooralation between using alfalfa meal and phyllody (or near phyllody) like Hoov says?

whats the point of using organic solutions.. if you just willy nilly keep drenching the poor plant repeatedly .. its pollution.. if you apply a cure .. TO AN UNIDENTIFIED PROBLEM... i dont care if its organic pollution.. or chemical pollution .. what is the plant.. why is it potted.. when was it last re-potted .... and how long did it dry out for .. was it properly hardened off before being put in sun.. and where are you ken

You don't want to spray Roundup or any similar herbicides near your roses. The spray can drift far (20 - 30 feet), and the damage looks similar to your third photo. Not saying that it definitely IS herbicide damage, but I wouldn't do any more herbicide sprays around the roses. On the chili thrip front, in addition to the state ag folks, send a copy of the photos to Dr. Malcolm Manners at Florida Southern College (Google him). He stops by the forums from time to time (usually over in the Antique Roses forum), but a direct email would be best.

Thanks Diane for your response! I am having such issues this summer in my garden lots of different pests appear to be arriving. I haven't sprayed anything in the garden yet. Just the usual watering. It's possible the rose bush could have gotten more water than usual, since I have a japenese iris behind it. Also, I had some irises infected with the iris borer next to the rose bush, just dug them out. Any suggestions on what to do?

If thats the case could it be that the roots got flooded then the sun dried the leaves. Kinda like a tree that gets flooded in a swamp. If you also dug near it that my have shocked it?
I am curious to know if it is a garden pest also.

Have you looked for little green rose slugs on the underside of the leaves?

Thanks Jeri for your response. I looked for the green slugs and I can't find any! :) I'm so lost as to what this is.

It looks a lot like rose slug damage to me.

Try running the pad of your index finger slowly over the underside of an affected leaf.
I'd guess you'll feel a lowered area that corresponds to the gray. That argues for a rasping herbivorous insect.
Try putting a sheet over the roses at night and see if you interrupt the critters dropping onto the leaves (they would still be on the sheet in the morning.)
Then go after the ones on the roses (that often are subtly colored). Way back when, dusting with sulphur was a low teck option.
