Just planted river birch trees from a 5 gallon pot...

I just bought some river birch trees that are about 5 feet tall--they were planted in a 5 gallon pot from the nursery. I just read online a little bit ago that I should have broken up the root ball before I planted them. I'm not an expert gardener or anything--just your average person trying to spruce up the backyard. Since I didn't break up the root ball, are the trees going to have problems growing? Do I need to dig them back up and break it up? I really appreciate your help b/c I don't want to lose my investment! Thanks!
