African Violets

brown, dried up leaves on my mini AV

Several weeks ago, I treated a number of my violets with a fungicide for powdery mildew. It seems to have taken care of that problem, but one of my minis -- Rob's Outer Orbit -- has nosedived since then... the small leaves that were sprouting from the center of the crown have either withered completely or they have developed brown, curled-under edges. It looks so unhappy, whereas before, it was my happiest and seemingly healtiest violet.

Any thoughts about whether the mildew (or I) caused permanent damage, based on this description? (Sorry, no pics, but maybe I can remember to take my camera to work on Monday to get some -- my violets are in my office.) Maybe I just need to be patient and let them grow out, but I'm worried that I've killed that sweet plant.

Thanks for any thoughts or suggestions you might have.

Hi Rebecca,

Your variegated mini could have been injured from the powdery mildew treatment. You didn't mention what product was used, but some of the variegated foliage plants are more sensitive. If it was Lysol, that may have been the culprit.

From your description the crown has been injured. Spray the leaves lightly with warm water to remove the treatment, shake excess off and make sure the crown area(what little you have left) doesn't hold any water droplets. Just let it grow out and it should sprout some suckers for you which can be potted up. I doubt if your original crown will return. I suggest removing some leaves and put them down just in case.

It's probably Murphy's Law but it always seems whichever violet you value most highly, is the one to which something happens!

Thanks, Elaine! I didn't use Lysol -- something from the nursery (it's in my storage closet at the moment). Maybe it was too potent for the mini. :(

Scott: Your young tree may have fireblight. Google this disease and see if any of the photos check with what you see on your tree. I have been pruning off areas of fireblight from my more mature apple trees for the past 6 weeks. We have had a lot of rain here too in May and June, and the weather conditions seem favorable to this disease, even though I sprayed with agricultural streptomycin at blossom time, which is about the only known treatment that can head off this disease. Fireblight on a very small tree is a much more serious matter, since you can end up pruning off much of the tree, but pruning is the only solution at this point. Affected branches will not recover, and this disease can continue to spread throughout the tree unless they are removed. Prune well below any area of visible infection. A few apple varieties have more resistance to this disease than others, but it seems to me that most can be affected if weather conditions are favorable to its development. Hi, Your AV will eventually grow new leaves from the center of the crown. If it's a standard you can expect it to grow from 8 to 12 inches across. Some grow even larger depending on the hybrid. If the leaves are turning brown on the edge, remove them. Any good leaves that you trim can be put into a mix and used to start new plants. Dogwood, leaves suddenly dried up, Anthracnose?

If the tree was healthy with no sign of symptoms a few weeks ago and then all it's leaves just suddenly dried up and turned brown, that doesn't sound like anthracnose. Without more info, there's really no way to tell what the problem is/was. Closer examination might lead to some clues. Your local county extension agent might be able to further assist you, or if you can provide more info, we might be able to provide further evaluation. Tx. ahelaumakani. Unfortunately my kitchen sink (which is near the back door to the garden) doesn't have a normal faucet....only a hose...so I can't hook up a garden hose to it. I finally decided to try the basement sink, sending the hose out the back window and under the deck to the yard. But alas, it seems the small window in the basement has the kind of screen that doesn't pop out. So frustrating! So I finally sent a note to my LL, telling him that for years I've had to haul buckets, and couldn't he figure somethihng out for me so I can get water out back? We'll see what he says.... :-(

Unfortunately, I am back on the forum tonight looking for ways to sterilize my pots -- not only did my mini violet die, but stupid powdery mildew killed the rest of my minis and a few of my standards, too... :(

Home Depot had a ton of lovelies (standards) on sale this weekend, so I restocked, but I want to be sure my old pots are clean before I repot the new ones. (I'll be sure to keep the new ones in quarantine for awhile to be sure they're clean themselves!)

Rebecca, wash your pots in 9 parts water and 1 part bleach. Let them sit for 10 minutes or so; that should kill just about anything.
