Planting bareroot in zone 9 now?

Would it be a lost cause to try to plant bare root roses now in the sacramento valley? Just wondering what the successes rate would be, should one expect 1/2 not to survive? They would be in full shade to start.

Tim -- I think a lot would depend upon the condition of the plants.
At this date, having been dug early last Fall, and sat in cold storage for, oh, 8 or so months, I worry that they'd be awfully dessicated.
IF they were healthy, and IF you really worked at it -- hilled 'em up, kept 'em wet -- I think you could pull 'em through.
But that's a BIG "if."

Well if you have them, give it a try. If you are buying them, I would take a look at how green the canes are and if the bedding inside is damp. If you do plant, keep them shaded for several days if you are having heat. Just my 2 cents. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Let us know.

where in z5 ... that is not very descriptive as the zone is very variable ... are the plants fully dormant???? its a bit too early in my z5 MI ... the soil is going in and out of frozen ... presuming they are zone appropriate.. its not as much an issue of hardy enough.. its a heave issue ... finding them in a few weeks laying on the ground.. popped out ... presuming that are bundled.. i would wet some media in a pot big enough to hold the whole wad ... barely wet .... and leave it in the garage for at least another 3 weeks or so ... it is proper to take delivery in full dormancy ... and to 'hold them' until proper planting time.. rather than simply planting them.. because you got them... good luck ken

Coriander doesn't like a lot of heat or a lot of sun, all of the rest will do just fine. Your cold weater will not come until about mid October or later, so you should have a little time. If it were me in Z9/10, I would have started most indoors and then planted outside in maybe March or April, to take advantage of the very long growing season.

I vote for horseherb, has pretty yellow flowers, ground hugging growth pattern. I treat it as a weed and it is easy to pull when soil is soft. But you must keep a watchful eye as a tiny bit of leftover root will regrow.

Do you have to plant them in the ground ? Wouldn't it be better to plant them in large containers and then plant them out in fall ? I agree with both of the posts above and have planted out roses in triple digit temps that never seem to go away. I've planted roses in large containers and in the ground in this kind of weather. I have found that the roses seem to be easier to bring along when I've used containers vs planting them in the ground.

In both cases, I protected the top growth by covering the canes with a wet t-shirt trailing into a bucket of water. The t-shirt does soak up a lot of the water from the bucket, but I still had to go out several times a day to re-fill the bucket and wet down the t-shirt to keep the canes from drying out. It's important not to remove the protective covering too soon in this kind of heat ... the new foliage fries.

The other advantage of using a container during the periods of high heat, is that you can place it in a shadier spot in your garden, if you have shade, as long as it is not near a structure that reflects heat back onto the plant.

I haven't got them yet, but my neighbor ordered several & they are going to share some with me. Jeri, I doubt they will arrive nice & healthy, but we could get lucky.
roseblush1, my neighbor was planning on planting directly in the ground, mine are going into 5gal pots. I like that idea of covering them with a wet t-shirt trailing into a bucket of water. I bet that would help LOTS in our dry heat.

I've used this method a few times and the only time it failed was when I took the t-shirt off too soon. The last rose I HAD to move was during the summer when we have unrelenting triple digit temps with dry heat. The t-shirt wicked the water out of the bucket, but I still sprayed it down when it looked dry.

I hardened off the foliage by leaving the t-shirt off in the morning hours when the temps were lower, but had it covering the plant before the temps got up to 90 degrees. It took 3 to 4 weeks before I saw enough new growth to know that the roots were bring moisture up to the top growth of the rose. The deer that had chosen that rose as their favorite treat had already pruned down the top growth before the move, so I was trying to protect the remaning canes and any new growth.

The plant has thrived in spite of needing TLC when I moved it.

Thalibut, you might want to check a recent thread here on a similar subject.
Renee (Hosenemesis, whose gardens are fabulous), ordered up some bare root Munstead Woods from David Austin at the end of May. And she got what seems to me to be extremely wise advice from a few other veteran posters on how to get them through the heat. And there are photos.
