help me save my kousa dogwood

A little more than a year ago, I moved two medium size

kousas because I had to. One leafed out this year and even

had blooms....the larger one is alive (for now), however,

the leaf buds never opened. I'm sure that it's struggling

a bit, eventhough, I watch and keep it moist.

Does anyone have any ideas of how I can help my precious

baby survive???

If the cambium layer - just under the bark, seen when you lightly scratch the bark on a small stem - is still green, then I would continue to water whenever the top few inches of soil dry out. Just be sure to water ONLY when the top of the root ball is dry (too much water can be as detrimental as too little), and then water slowly and deeply, the equivalent of an inch of rain per week, so adjust according to the rainfall. If you haven't mulched around it, I would do so - as widely as possible, no deeper than 4" and no mulch in the 2-3" next to the trunk. Otherwise, trees have been known to sit for most of the summer before they leaf out - I would give it a while longer.

Agree with ken, exercise your warranty but if that doesn't work, DO NOTHING except water only if it needs it. And for heaven's sake, don't apply any more fertilizer. And for Pete's sake (getting several of the "sakes" in, here) take those funky strings off! It is a small enough tree that I doubt wind will hurt it. And use the rebar to drive away burglars! ;o) hortster

No, it's all the way around (though, I suppose that would still mean lawn side, as it is in the middle of the yard). I do have a lawn service that fertilizes every two months year round, but he does not use spray. He just uses the standard pellet fertilizer, just like you would buy at Home Depot. Other than that, I have not put any sort of food or fertilizer on the tree (that I can recall). Here is a picture of the tree from further back.

If it was recently dug from it's former location, many of the roots were severed in the process and it will take some time for it to recover from the shock. A 2" caliper specimen would have had a large, shallow root system, much like a Maple. Dogwoods, however, are a forgiving type of tree. I have one that has been growing in a pot for many years and being in a secluded location, it seems that I always forget about it during long periods without rainfall. The leaves curl, become a crispy brown and fall off. As soon as it rains, it springs back to life. You may also want to check the rootball to see if the moisture is penetrating it. Depending upon the care the tree received after it was dug, the rootball can become hard and compacted and moisture cannot penetrate into the roots. As Eddie stated, I prefer those that are pot grown or field grown in grow bags that confines the roots and none are severed when dug. Best of luck! I believe it will survive. Rb

rockman, as I understand it...cornus kousa is resistant to many diseases but it's been awful wet this spring with virtually no warm sunshine to dry things out. I found this South Carolina info sheet...do any of the things described sound like what's happening to your Mom's dogwood?
