2009 ARS Roses in Review Survey

ItÂs time for the annual Roses in Review (RIR), the American Rose Society's annual survey of roses. Results from the "Garden" evaluations are used as the ratings in the "Handbook for Selecting Roses". Participation in the RIR process is open to EVERYONE! Membership in the ARS or a local rose society is not required.

The link to the on-line entry form is below. You have to register to use the site, click on "New User" your first time in. The ARS will not use the information to SPAM you, the info is used to assist the RIR reporters with data tabulation, and is deleted after the end of the survey period. You do not have to complete your entries at one time, you can come back and add more. Just be sure to use the same information (e-mail and name) the next time you want to enter. Also, remember to hit the "Save" button after entering data. If you participated last year, you will have to register as a "New User" again this year.

The 2009 RIR survey form is also available in the July/August issue of American Rose (the magazine for members of the ARS).

On-line and paper forms must be submitted on or before September 26, 2009, to be included in this yearÂs results.

This year the survey will include not only recent introductions, but also older roses of interest that do not currently have a rating.

A reminder to all Consulting Rosarians and Judges, you are required to submit a RIR survey.

Take note of the fact that, for the past few years, several Old Roses (previously un-rated) have been included.

It doesn't take long to do this, and it's a good thing to do!

Did my duty!
Not so many I have are listed. I have less than 20 of those listed plus a few I'll have to wait a month or so to see how they do.

I'm so glad you posted this. I got my ARS mag with the varieties and was just waiting for you or Phil to post the link here so that I could get my say in. I hope this thread doesn't get buried, because I want everyone to participate. I so enjoy reading the reviews when they come out. I can't tell you how much $$ they have saved me over the years. I keep each years review and if I become interested in a rose years later I will have an additional source of information about it. Another reason to belong to the ARS. Thanks Diane.

Please do participate. As national chair of Roses in Review I opened it up to everyone several years ago so we could get input from all rose growers. We are trying to help all rose growers with the survey, and we need as much input as we can get. I would love to see the day where we get as many reporters from non-ARS members as we do from ARS members. Then we would really have a good cross-section of opinion. C'mon, give it a try. It's easy and it's fast. Just go to www.ars.org, click on the survey in the upper right part of the screen, sign in and go to it. Thanks.

Maryl, I will try to include the color class of the roses in the RIR survey report this time. However, I think you may be laboring under some false assumptions. For one, the ARS is no more my organization that it is yours. I am simply a dues paying member who volunteers his time to run the RIR survey. The same is true for the district RIR coordinators who receive the reports for their districts. None of your dues money is going to pay for it. The ARS could triple my salary and it still wouldn't be enough to buy a piece of penny candy (if there still is such a thing). Back when you remember the results showing color class and other goodies, the survey was run so the results from the 2008 version which just closed wouldn't be published until December of 2009 when the Annual came out. You should get the results now in the January 2009 magazine, which is much more timely. In order to do that, my district coordinators have about 19 days to put their district reports together and send them to me. Some of them have 200 reporters, so there is a lot of detail to handle. I then have 16 days to compile the 18 district reports into the national report and get it to Shreveport to include in the January magazine. We simply don't have the time to include all the little niceties the longer wait allowed for. We also are quite limited in space in the magazine, so it isn't easy to add things. However, I'll do my best to include the color class this year.

Chris, you are welcome to send me the complete reorganization you have in mind. If you are concerned it might give Board members a coronary, then send it to me by email. My email address is available on this site. I promise you I won't have a coronary, even though I am on the Board. As to the three year terms of Board members, elections are expensive and time consuming. Holding them more often than every three years would mean we were spending an inordinate amount of time and effort on elections and less time on the business of the organization. I have to tell you I think such an approach would be counterproductive. However, I do agree the Board is too large and think we should have more effective limits on the number of consecutive years someone can serve on the Board. I am in my second term on the Board and it will be my last. If I can't get things done in six years, it's time for someone else to work on them. I'm not sure which big businesses you have dealt with, but I can tell you Boards of big businesses do not ask stockholders or anyone else for input before conducting the business of the company. I have seen them in action in their business meetings and they are less open than the ARS Board. Anyway, lay your suggestions on me and I will let you know what I think. The ARS is not perfect by any means and any ideas that will help will be welcomed.

Well I have 12 of the roses listed... but somehow I ended up with 13 in my review... not sure how to get rid of the one I didn't review...

It was very confusing at first. I would click on the rose on the left frame and nothing would change on the right frame... Took me a while to figure out that the list on the left is redundant and I have to choose all the info on the right as well...

Anyway, still better than filling out the form by hand :)

If one was duplicated it will not be counted. I too had a little problem at first. One nice thing though, once a variety is reviewed and submitted, it doesn't show up again to be reviewed.

It should only be recorded once, but if it gets to the coordinator, they will figure it out! Thank you!

I had the problem of the list on the left when I was testing the system. The programmer told me I needed to clean out my cache, since my computer was still remembering the way the system was set up last year. Try it if you are still having the problem.

Don't you sometimes just wish you could talk to your computer and tell it what to do? On second thought, maybe that isn't such a good idea since some of the things I tell my computer to do when I'm angry with it would mean buying a new computer.

Well, that was fun! I only had seven from the lists, and it was hard adjusting for the young age of them. Glad to throw that info out there, though.

decobug, you say you aren't sure what roses you reported on. Just go to the "List Your Reports" link in the upper right corner of the actual report form and click on it. A list will come up with all the roses you reported on and the scores you gave them. If you see something that isn't right, let me know and we'll get it fixed.

Thanks Phil...

I reported on 12 roses and a 13th rose that I didn't report on was on my list... "Alan Titchmarsh" - it must have popped up and I must have hit save while I was trying to enter The Shepherdess...

I looked for a 'delete' function but there wasn't one...

Another thing I noticed was that I didn't have to enter my ARS member number this year... Are they now allowing everyone to vote to increase the number of votes? That would be great if true...

The Roses in Review survey has been open to all for a few years now.
So, all you Rose Forum people, go to the site and review the roses listed that you have.
Go to the link below, or to www.ars.org and click on the roses in review banner traveling across the middle of the screen.

I did it. What is difficult for me is to evaluate a rose that is "ho hum". Nothing is wrong with it, but to me it isn't very pretty. My two "ho hums" are Carefree Celebration and Cinco de Mayo.

Karl is right, as usual. We opened the survey up to anyone some time back. There are plenty of non-ARS members who grow roses and can do a good job of evaluating them, so why not get the advantage of their experience? By the way, we also have posted the results for the last several years on the ARS website so anyone can see them. It seems only fair that if we are going to ask non-members to report, they should be able to see the results.

When you are using the online survey and you accidently hit the wrong name, you can just go back to the list and pick the right one. The system will remind you that you didn't file a report for the last one, but it will let you move on without it. Decobug, if the list of your reviews show Alan Titchmarsh, but without any ratings for it, we will drop it. If it does show a rating that you don't want, give me your name or email address and we'll delete it.
