I didn't know that they had kept two of the Chihuly installations from when he had so many in the garden.
And somewhere I have pictures of when it was a year old and one of the berms had plants that were barely there. They've grown well. Also the vertical zig zags are filling in.

I think we may try for the gardens there July 19, just to see what looks passable.

Visited ABG last week,recommend it for the collection of Henry Moore art,and the conservatory. The rose collection in my opinion was very disappointing. Many plants had very few leaves to support attractive blooms. I was informed that ABG removed all hybrid teas and went "organic".No problem with that decision. But does that mean the remaining plants should be colorless in warm weather months?

Gean, I would like to go again. It was a quick trip due to the heat/smell and we had other things to do (saw Monet Water Lillies at the High museum). And I'd like to do the trip without DH asking me what every plant was, as if I would know (I thought one plant was a weed but apparently it wasn't!).

I didn't think the blackspot was that bad,but the roses didn't look that good either. As oldroseguy said, there were almost no blooms. But then again, I don't have many on my roses at this point either. It was ridiculously hot here the past week, so many of my roses are in a lull, but some are putting on new growth and I hope to have a flush soon.

I was kind of disappointed in the pruning of the roses. Many were just 3 tall sticks with pom poms of leaves at the top and a lot had dead twiggy growth that should be removed. Maybe I'm too fussy with my roses.

Does snyone know how old are the roses at the ABG?
That is interesting about the pruning, Buford. Is that the way the teas look too? I wonder if the hybrid tea rosarians are the same ones growing the old roses and pruning them the same?

I gave a talk on Rose Rosette at the Greater Atlanta Rose Society back in (I think it was 2001) and the first part of the program was a presentation of the blue print for the new layout for the garden. If I've got the year right, the plantings would have been in 2002 and 2003.

Chihuly exhibit was 2006, and the roses then looked to be two to three years old, but the companion plants still were beginning to spread.

(About the old modern rose plantings, those were barely a foot tall in fall with lots of dead areas around the grafts and not a lot of blooms for the fall ARS national there.)

Thank you, Ann. There are a lot of roses in that garden that I've not seen before so I'm very glad to be able to go and see them this fall. The ABG master gardener kindly sent me a list of what they grow, which I know they would do for anyone that called to ask them.

It does look like some of the tea roses were hacked back to 4'.

I keep meaning to go to ABG but have never taken the opportunity--life has been very hectic for the last few years. I think I need to go one weekend this fall. Thanks for the reminder.

Gean, the teas looked a bit more filled out, with the exception of the Mlle Franziska Kruger. I'd have to say, judging by the 3 teas that I've had in my yard since 2006 (including MFK) they must have cut back some of them because none were over 3 feet tall. And if they've been there since 2002, I'd think they bet more mature and larger than they were. Mine are about 5 feet already and I had to cut back Marie d'Orleans because it was already going over my head.

I'd be very interested to go with a group from here. Please let me know.
