Treating Black Knot Disease on plum tree after Spring

My father-in-law has a plum tree with black knot disease in his backyard. We didn't know what it was until today when I did some research on it.

Everything I can find says to prune the tree in the Spring. I'm guessing the disease probably started at the end of last fall and he discovered it (or became concerned about it) this year.

Can the tree be pruned now or can we wait until next spring? I think he really wants to save the tree.

I called a tree person from the phone book and he said he doesn't deal with those types of things but he said we could wait until next Spring to prune. I wasn't sure how much he knew about the disease so I thought I'd ask here.
