does full sun really mean full sun??
Comments (6)Steve is right! I had to learn the hard way to add shade to whatever they recommend, like full sun = about a half day or no more than 3/4 of a day of sun and part sun/part shade = mostly shade, just a little sun filtering in here and there or several hours of morning sun. Most recommendations must be for northerners. There are some plants that can take full sun, but they're just about all trees - pines, red maples, sweet gums, persimmons, wild black cherry, etc. The foundation for Gulf Coast gardening has to be trees! :) Sherry...See MoreSalvia regla in full sun - or tall Salvia that likes full sun?
Comments (11)Thank you for your replies. Richard - of the two pictures of S. regla, Huntington BG apperas to have the form I'm seeking - upright and open. I'm looking for one that grows 6 or more feet tall, like the one in the picture I shared. Ours grows on the north side of our house in amended clay and gets sun only in summer. And, the S. melissodora is beautiful, but I'm seeking a Salvia that blooms in warm colors (orange, red, yellow) to contrast with other nearby plants with blooms in the blue range. KermitC - I believe I have S. flocculosa which I purchased at a plant sale several years go and it was labeled 'Rio Bamba'. It's currently growing in a spot that gets only afternoon sun. It is 3-4 feet tall with open sprawling growth -- do you think it should grow much taller than that in full sun? Research of S. fulgens tells me it may not grow as tall as I'd like - 6' or more feet tall....See MoreWhen/how to Shift Key Lime From Full Sun Inside to Full Sun Outside
Comments (11)Most of my citrus get only about 4 to 6 hours of sun in summer. I don't usually have them in full all-day sun. They seem to grow better in pots for me this way. For my situation the pots would overheat too much in all-day full sun. And I've never had a problem with blooming and fruit production. Usually they start blooming before I even set them out. I start them out in shade in spring and gradually -- over a period of 3 weeks -- move them to more sun. I do this because usually they have a lot of tender new growth before I even set them out. Actually toward September/October I do move them to as sunny and protected spot as possible because I want to make the most of the shorter and cooler days. Also want fruit to ripen....See MoreDoes full sun REALLY mean full sun?
Comments (6)When I first started gardening, all those terms were a little unclear also. However, based on experience and lots of reading, this is what I have learned: a) full sun means that about 6-8 hours of sun is sufficient. Again, for some plants like veggies, more sun is better, but it doesn't have to be all day sun to thrive and produce well. For example, in your Texas growing conditions (OP), you are probably getting about 12-14 hours of sun if your yard were fully open to sun all day long. b) partial sun - means morning sun and afternoon shade, not filtered light in a mostly shady spot like I used to think c) plants that like shade -- some plants are supposed to do fine in shade or even want only shade, but other plants that can handle shade, if you give them just a bit of sun, either in morning or afternoon, and they do even better. an example is impatiens and purple queen. impatiens also did better with filtered sun than with just plain old shade like the label says that it can only do shade d) fuchsia - no matter what the label says, it can't grow in my area even in shade, so forget it every year when they show up in the nurseries...See Morevivian_2010 (IL Zone 5a)
