Watering question

I need advice about watering -

I have a dripper irrigation system installed in my garden to water both my flowers and roses. For the roses I have single emitters that drip about 2 gallons per hour near the base of the rose. I've read that roses, during the hot season, require about 4 gallons of water a week, so I currently run the system 4 times a week for 30 minutes a session (which should water the roses about 1 gallon). All my roses are 1 year old or are new plantings, so I'd like to encourage nice deep root growth.

My question is this - would it be more beneficial to run fewer, longer watering sessions. Or should I stick to the current schedule? (I read somewhere that deeper watering promotes deeper root growth).

On another note, does 4 gallons a week sound adequate or too much? My soil is more clay-like than sandy.
