growing oaks from seed...

I've read up on growing oaks from acorns.

I have a question - I know red oaks need cold stratification but white oaks do not.

Most of what I've read says white oaks germinate in fall after dropping. How does this work dormancy-wise? Knowing how frost-sensitive new white oak shoots are in spring, how do these little delicate seedlings survive the winter when sprouting in fall?

And if I choose to propogate them, what's the best method?
