Yep, serviceberry, and yes, you can eat them as they are. Quality is a bit variable, yours don't look the juiciest I've seen, but I've also seen worse. Whatever, they certainly won't hurt you. If they taste rather sour/bitter, leave them a few days to ripen more (but watch out the birds don't grab all of them!!).

Yep, looks like my sevice berry tree.
Just had one plated a month ago - 12 ft tall for new house.

I forgot to spray seven dust on it though, and the Japanese Beetles started about 2 weeks ago here (Raleigh NC).
They've eaten about half the leaves on it.. do you think the tree will survive and make it until next year?

Its a big tree.. i assumed all would go into shock this year anyway from being transplanted.. so im hoping losing half the leaves now won't be too bad since they should come back next year? Im hoping at least.. What do you all think?

This afternoon, my kids help me harvest the berries. We gathered about 75% of it. The dark purple berries really taste good. However, I noticed that few berries have insects moving. They are really small. The length is somewhat 0.75mm and they're very narrow too. The width is like 0.1mm. I noticed that they jump and have wings. The color is light beige. Are they ok? Do they go inside the berry? Right now, I placed them in my freezer.

I tried taking a picture but my camera's macro sucks! It's always blurred.

Please let me know.

They probably jump in response to disturbance - shake the fruit until they all jump out. Unlikely to be poisonous if eaten accidentally, though.

Seems to be a common feature of digital cameras! They always autofocus on the most distant item in the field of view. Try putting something large (e.g. a sheet of card) immediately behind the subject of the photo.

I'd reckon very probably yes, they will be OK. Look out for biological control for the JB if they get very numerous.

I'd be surprised if those drupes stayed on the tree more than 24 hours. The birds get those things quickly if you have a lot of birds.

Resin, I can't believe you'd "reckon" anything! I thought that was a Southern U.S. expression! :)
