Coreopsis reborn after 10 years?

About 10 years ago we had Coreopsis rosea in the front of our house. It wasn't showy enough so we replaced it with a Carpet rose which did just great in the location.

Last fall I decided that I wanted to change the colors in this location and pulled the carpet rose out. I left the area unplanted this summer. A few weeks ago I noticed a couple of Coreopis rosea plants blooming in the general area. Did some old seeds get kicked up and replanted when I yanked the rose or am I dreaming? Neither of my neighbors have this plant that I've noticed. I do have one in the back yard, but it was just planted this spring. How would they have gotten there?
