Craftsman lawn tractor blades won't engage
Comments (2)You will need to check for 12V and ground at the harness for starters. AN increased gap will not always let a clutch engage, but would it pop the fuse getting hot enough? Never say never. Is it possible a wire backed up in the connector behind the pto switch?...See MoreMotor Replacement 12/38 MTD Lawn Tractor
Comments (3)Tom Plum's answer seems most plausible, to me. If you find it is like that, just turn the flywheel backwards, and that gear should pop out, thereby freeing the engine to turn. This is usually caused by a low charged battery. Also, you don't have much of a problem of finding the exact replacement engine. I have changed engines in lawn tractors, and the only problems i have had are making sure the lower end of the crankshaft is the same size as the old one, and maybe having to change the throttle/choke/electrical connections....See MoreBelts on MTD Lawn Tractor
Comments (4)Yes, if you are careful an impact with a good long extension works on most. The pulley mates with a star- much like a blade /hub configuration. There are some I've run into that don't have enough room to get an impact socket on the nut and through the body cavity. On these the transaxle gets lowered. Still some others require you remove the clip on the deck height lever and pull the shaft out of the way. All that being said, about 80% have the clearance so the impact will work, but if you would rather not- loosen the transaxle....See MoreTurned into hill too quickly, hit...now tractor won't start.
Comments (5)Thanks for the suggestions; they were great to read and definitely things I'll keep in mind if I have a similar problem in the future. As to this situation, as it turns out I had run out of gas (I know, I know). The thing is, I DID hit the opposing side a bit hard, and did in fact crack the upper hood (which I've since fixed using some fiberglass underneath and sanding/repainting on top). But I ran out of gas just as I was turning, so the two things happened at exactly the same time. Now you guys can't of course know this, but I'm actually a really handy guy and I know my way around tools, etc. really well. If the damn thing had done the same symptoms when I was on level ground I'd have instantly realized I was out of gas, but the two things happening together put me down a road of assumption that I shouldn't have gone down. Like I said, good learning. Thanks again for the advice...all good thoughts! Take care....See Moremownie
