Your Best Dog Days Roses

Where I live in the Deep South, the dog days of summer are here. Seems like a good time to find out from others just what roses perform the best for you in the deep heat of summer. Most roses take a long siesta during this time of year or else they succomb to the ravages of disease and insects. For me, the best performers are Belinda's Dream and Mrs. B. R. Cant. My China roses aren't looking bad, but they aren't blooming much at the moment. I leave you with some pictures of Belinda's Dream along with some companions. These were just taken over the last couple of days.

Deep South here too, and I second Belinda's Dream as a real trooper. My hat is off to Julia Child too as well as Double Delight and Cherry Parfait. Poor ol' Mr. Lincoln. Every year I say he's gonna meet Mr. Shovel, and this just might be his year.

I'm awfully keen still about a new Knockout x Oklahoma seedling. Of course the peeps over at rosehybridizers had to curse it with a touch of mildew, but it's still doing good. It's not defoliated yet and it hasn't been sprayed. Plus it's been raining like every other day. It's going to make a good breeder. I'm aiming for fragrance and mildew resistance on the next generation.

--six flowers/4th flush/3 opened today...not bad for a couple months old.

I love the flowers and fragrance of Young Lycidas, and it IS one of my favorite roses --- but I do struggle with its growth habit. It sends up long (very) long skinny canes that cannot support the weight of the flowers. So I have to pick the flowers up off the ground (very nearly) to see them or to take in their wonderful fragrance. I was going to give it away last year and we were in my yard to dig it out for my friend when a nearby redwood tree root made the digging too much of a struggle. So I kept it after all, and I'm glad I did. But I wish I could figure out a way to get the canes to fatten up so they would support the flowers. Other than Young Lycidas I have two other very favorite roses: Matangi and Lady Emma Hamilton. Matangi is one of the so-called Painted Roses and it has so many virtues -- disease free in my garden, deep green glossy leaves, never out of bloom, super light-up-the-landscape last forever blooms, big fat generous hips, neat bushy habit. If it has a fault, I suppose I will have to admit it lacks fragrance. Lady Emma is one of David Austin's and aside from its beautiful flower and wonderful fragrance, I am quite taken with its foliage color which is hard to describe but the leaves are flushed with a sort of brownish burgundy which is a perfect color blend for the flowers. The very attractive foliage persists all winter for me until the new leaves in spring force the old ones to drop. I welcome its shorter size, and it is very full and bushy. And healthy.

This is an interesting topic for your thread, caught my attention immediately. I have been photographing my garden a bit this year (although I am still so sluggish about the whole Photobucket to posting online thing. Never sit still long enough to learn how to post a photo here!), and I am finding out that several hours in the middle of the day produces the worst photos. I have had the best luck so far in early evening or late afternoon. But, for sheer enjoyment of the garden, I'm with Florence, I love the early morning in the garden with a steaming cup of hot tea or coffee, a warm scone or muffin, and only the wildlife for company That is as close to Heaven as I can get this side of death. Soft morning light, the wind whispering through the tall pines, cottonwoods, and pecan trees, sometimes the sun in a haze of clouds with rays shining forth. Even a cool and foggy morning can be nice, the muffled sounds, as if the creatures are in a hush, afraid to speak out in the silence... Yes, definitely morning, and any lighting that the weather provides!

Just went out to check all my leaves. The disease-resistant roses with glossy foliage all have 7-leafets: Kordes Flower Carpet, Pat Austin and Tchaikovsky. Kordes Flower Carpet doesn't have mildew in shade, but Knock-out (5-leaflet) has mildew. Other DISEASE-RESISTANT with 7-leaflets: William Shakespeare 2000, Duchess de Rohan, Excellenz von Schubert, Annie L. McDowell, Blue Mist, Poseidon, Cloudert Soupert, and Crown Princess Mag. ... all have leaves in set of 7. These can take wet soil well, like multiflora rose thriving in wet lands. But the blackspot-prone roses: Comte de Chambord and hybrid teas have leaves in set of 5, and much larger & round leaves. These prefer well-drained soil, and tend to blackspot with prolonged wetness & acidic rain. Multiflora-leaves are clearly a set of 7, see below pic: http://na.fs.fed.us/spfo/invasiveplants/factsheets/pdf/multiflora-rose.pdf "Each multiflora leaf as 5 to 11 one inch-long oval leaflets with toothed margins. The undersides of the leaflets have tiny hairs and are paler than the upper surface. As indicated by its scientific name Rosa multiflora, this plant has abundant, showy clusters of flowers which typically are white, though sometimes slightly pink." Below is Austin rose William Morris, which did terrible in slightly acidic wet & peaty potting soil, then finally died when I put in my wet clay made acidic with cracked corn. Note the leaves are in a set of 5, which means it prefer well-drained & loamy soil, and CANNOT take acid & wetness like those of set-7 leaves. Folks complain about WM being stingy and rust-fungal-prone. The drought-tolerant & disease-resistant Rugosa has rounder leaves in set of 9, plus very bristly canes full of thistles, see below:

I bought my Francis Meilland from a nursery clearance three years ago as a half-dying potted bareroot rose, and it bounced back pretty well. I put it in a pot for one year, and after two years being in the ground, no matter how hard I pruned it back, it grew to 7 feet tall. (I removed about 3 feet from each stem after the first flush.) It's not stingy for me at all, blooming regularly every 5-6 weeks. Maybe it just needs some time to mature. I only fertilized once in March and water my roses every three days in summer. We're not as hot as other states/countries, though. Photo taken 3 days ago.

Astronomically speaking, the dog days of summer haven't yet arrived, but they might as well have . . . Most of my modern roses have already begun producing MUCH smaller blooms. Even some of the so-called 'heat lovers' (St Patrick, Marilyn Monroe, Memorial Day, Elizabeth Taylor, et al.) are pouting. At spring flush, my favorite new modern was 'Sedona'. The color on that one was spectacular then -- now it's kinduva a muddled mess. Obviously, 'Sedona' is either thermotropic or phototropic.

This is the time of year when my beds of modern roses look MUCH better from a distance. Lots & lots of color (and many compliments from neighbors), but up close and personal . . . not much to brag about.

It's been hot here lately. All my HT's have lost all their size. The only rose that seems unfazed by the blazing sun is the miniflora, Whirlaway. Hasn't slowed down, lost any size or ANYTHING. The longer I grow this beauty the more I'm impressed with it. It's only downside, the thrips love it. This is easly taken care of. I choose 3 to 5 blooms every week and spray them every evening. The kids in my 4th & 5th grade Sunday School class love this rose. Just their size. One of the few roses I can ALWAYS count on.

Everything here is in bloom despite the 95 and up temperatures. My Belinda's Dream however are putting on a WOW show.

I get sun where they are from sunup until about 10:30 then mostly shade until 5pm...then full sun til sundown. They are all loving it and they get a respite from the noon sun.

My Julia Child has small blooms - so, she doesn't get my vote.

Cinco de Mayo, however, is blooming and hasn't quit all summer. Still nice size blooms, and very nice foliage. The flowers are different, and some don't like the color, but this shrub seems to love the heat.

Not quite 100 here yet, but we've had numerous 98 and 99 degree days.

I really like this Harkness rose as a container rose. A nice short rounded shape that shakes off the heat and blooms well all season. Lady Mitchell

At the moment, its Dorcas, a Buck rose. Just totally FULL of blooms. I love this rose - disease resistant, lovely blooms.....I never hear much about it - it flushes regularly. Lots to like about this one.

We are averaging in the upper 90's now and my modern roses have shut down for the summer. My best bloomers in the heat are: cinco de mayo, belinda's dream, julia child (sm blooms), marie pavie, perle d'or, easy does it and louis phillipe. The cinco has turned orange and lost it's smokey tones. Marie pavie is a work horse- hardly ever without blooms, lush foliage and growing in alkaline soil.
