ornament pear with fire blight

I'm hoping for assistance. My Chanticleer pear tree has been affected by fire blight. The leaves started out looking puckered and later on these puckering turned reddish brown and finally looking burned... This tree is in it's third year in the ground. I've cut off most of the affected limbs but the infection is widespread. I don't know how it became infected in the first place but right now, my goal is to help it survive. Is there any hope? Most internet information only says there's no cure but I don't wish to give up yet. If anyone has had experiences with this disease, please share your ideas and techniques in tackling this problem.

If the problem is fireblight, the internet info is correct.

Suggest you look for a replacement tree before you spend more years stressing about the tree. The longer you keep a severely affected tree, the worse you'll feel when you finally remove it.

Sometimes it's better to cut your losses early on. The you can say "Oh well, I tried, but it just doesn't work in my region."

Jean, thanks. I had chosen this plant over other plants because all the information I had gathered on this plant indicated that it doesn't suffer from diseases and it's something that I often see planted around my area... What a rude awakening to discover it does fall ill to such diseases. Last, I had a deck built around it so that it will remain undisturbed where it was originally planted. You can see why I am disappointed to say the least.

Oh well.. I'll give it another couple of years. If it dies, at least I could say I tried my best.

shambu: UC Davis has a good section on management. Study that and maybe you can get it under control. But if your tree is heavily infected it may not be possible to get it under control. You might need a more resistant variety. Here is a link that might be useful: fire blight management

I'm going to give you the counter opinion to copingwithclay. I had to seriously cut out fireblight two years running in my Hosui when it was small and it went on to survive girdling by goats. It it currently loaded with fine fruit. I've cut back Nijiseiki to just above the graft twice and it recovered (though I had to be really patient). Both of these, like the majority of Asian pears, are considered fireblight susceptible. I chopped the top out of my YaLi due to FB even though it is supposedly fireblight resistant. Shinko is also supposed to be resistant but it's not much for taste (for me at least). Most of my other Asian pears are considered susceptible though they have not gotten infected. Bottom line is that in my limited experience, most, if not all, of the Asian pears worth having are potentially susceptible and I would definitiely try to save them before getting rid of them. The recommended spray to prevent FB is streptomycin which is available from some of the mail order places. I have used it but I don't have enough experience to say how well it works in general. Close monitoring with quick pruning is my recommendation.

I am really happy to see that a company will do the measured 'smaller' dose. Needs to be done more often and would save a lot of mis-use for the less common treatments but still makes them available on a smaller scale. It does bother me that a city recommends this tree for mass plantings. A nearby town did this once not so long ago, and I don't think there is one of them left standing. They also installed some trees with the potential of becoming massive into some fancy ornamental grates, and extremely near to buildings. Looked super for awhile, but the eventual and inevitable 'un-installation' is a major hidden cost. If you are field growing ornamentals, then it would be worth the cost and effort to send off some samples to a diagnostic lab for pathogen confirmation. It's getting harder and more cost prohibitive than it used to be in our state, due to budget cut-backs, but it may save you some time and $. Like said, however, I did see this a bit in my very young plantings this year, but sat on it before any applications of anything and the issue resolved spontaneously.

Hi folks. Can anyone tell me if this tree has fireblight? It has some of the symptoms like blackened stem and leaves. But it doesn't show others that I read, like the leaves staying on the stem and curling into 'shepherd's crook'. The leaves have actually fallen off. And so far I haven't seen any oozing or any clear cankers. I am considering to just chop it down for fear of it spreading to other plants. Thank you very much.

The ornamental pears are also dreadful trees with such tigh limb crotches that they self-destruct when they reach 10-15 years old. They are also highly invasive--check out wild areas around you.

Choose a better tree- so many lovely ones to pick from.

That's surprising to hear. I have a chanticleer which isn't considered an invasive in our area. Other than the disease of fire blight, this is a pretty well behaved columnar type tree. I chose it after seeing so many nice examples in the city. Unfortunately I should have done a more extensive research on the kinds of diseases it can suffer from.
