Affordable and practical ways to raise humidity

I am tryting to better the care that I give to my AVs. The next step is raising humidity.

I was thinking of getting some plastic trays and putting some kind of a "grid" into them, then pour water in the trays and put the pots on top of the grid. Where would I get the trays that are not too expensive? What are the egg crates? Is it what I'm looking for (the "grid" I'm trying to describe :)).

Worse comes to worst I'll get some pebbles and will use those to host my pots. IS there something that goes on top of the pebbles? Is it how it's done? I think that pebbles will create mess/mold, though. Am I right?

Any other ideas?

Just now I'm learning about all the various suppliers, but have no idea who is good/reliable and who is not, YKWIM?

Thanks,

Inna
