Violet blossom rooted

I was having trouble getting my Emerald Love leaves to root at home, so I took two leaves and a flower blossom to work. I put them in water on my desk. I took the flower in to show co-workers that it realy had a green flower. I have never picked a violet flower before, but what it is doing I don't believe. When I checked the leaves last week, they were both rooted. It the time my thought was boy the flower is sure lasting a long time, and then I took a good look at it. The flower stem is also rooted.

Will this go on to produce leaves like a rooted leave will?

Is this normal? I have been told I have a green thumb, up to me this is a little beyond the normal.

it might get leaves. its not totally unheard of.

Lanay, how long is the stem, and how deep is the stem in water? Are the leaves on the flower stem dry above the water or submerged?

Just to clarify... you're seeing roots from the stem leaf and the bottom of the stem?

Wow! Cool. I'd like to try that too.

Hi Dar; I'm a big fan of the green blossoms too. I have Emerald Love, and also Rainbow's Limelight, Irish Sweeps and Vespa Verde. As of right now, I only have leaves to trade, but if you want I can start planting some for a future trade when the weather gets warmer. What do you have to trade? I agree with Al. Some growers even make certain there is a blooming size bud on their plants when they ship so the purchasor will know for certain that they received the correct plant. Peonies are not like strawberries or some other plants that supposedly having a bloom the first year will sap the strengh of the plant. Even though the leaves are very small they will fill with fluid and become larger. As far as strawberries, the old thought of not allowing to bloom the first year is being discarded for the home grower.

Hello :-) Well, I think your asking is about to remain dead letter ! I do love violets, I will never be crazy enought to cut hundred of them just to dye a dress: NO WAY ! Sorry for that. Anyway, I don't have hundred of them :-) What about growing yourself violets for that ? All the best :-) PS: asking all posts and making some I feel as beeing a kind of throll :-/ Where are all violet's fan ????

Beautiful Yellow African Violet. I have never seen one with yellow blooms Leon Ash. My Mother was a avid collector of AV. I am now growing some in her memory as I still remember alot of her directions about them. I have refreshed my memory reading all the posts here, old and new!

The stem on the flower is about 1 1/4 inches and is in water up to the neck of the flower. I just checked and the roots on the flower are almost 2 inches long. One leaf stem is abount an inch and half long, roots are about an inch and half long on that leaf. The other leaf stem is
1 3/4 inches long with roots almost 3 inches long. When I first saw the flower roots my first impression was that one of the leafs had 2 sets of roots. Then I took a better look, and took the flower out of the water, and it had roots. The flower is not attached in anyway to the leafs. All of the roots are at the bottom end of the stems on both the leafs and also the flower. Will let you know what happens next.

Thanks, Lanay. That was really interesting to hear, and I look forward to updates. (If you don't post here, please drop me a note at whimbrel at comcast dot net.) I think I'll try the same experiment and see what happens. It would be interesting to see if the flower puts out leaves.
