Sparse looking American Holly

We have a mature American Holly (about 50') in our back yard that we love. This year it shed its leaves in the spring as usual and had good leaf re-growth but is looking very sparse. Alot of branches w/ no growth. Haven't noticed any bugs etc so am wondering if maybe the old girl is just giving up the ghost. Anyone know the average life span of an American Holly and how do you tell if that is what is happening?

Damaged by severe weather event(s)? Otherwise, may be under attack by pathogenic organism such as fungus or water mold. Another thing that can throw a tree out of whack is exposure to garden chemicals like herbicides or lawn fertilizer. If no such likely circumstantial causes can be identified check the pathogen possibility by taking affected parts to Cooperative Extension office, see if they can help you.

It sure is it is growing in the Zone 6 part of SW MI in Benton Harbor. Not far from the lake. This is on the edge of one of the pockets where hollies, rhodo's and azaleas seem to thrive. Certain areas you see pretty nice specimens. Not sure what dictates this but it is evident as you drive around the area. You must be familiar with our area/growing conditions. Happy Gardening

Berry shape and size can very alot, and the plants you show are within the nrmal range of the species. This tree is very shade tolerant, but it grows slowly in the shade. Its usually an understory species, so it is adapted to such conditions, but growth is very slow. Overstory release such as the hurricane's will without a doubt increase flowering, fruiting and height growth. The more light the bigger the increase, thoough i dont think you should discriminate against taller trees for the benefit of the parent holly. Native American holly cultivars originating from the wild or plants grown from wild collected seed are true natives. Non-native American hollies are those originating from seedlings of garden planted cultivars in Europe or America. The seedlings would not be wild if originating from cultivated holly trees in gardens. If the holly seedlings were found in the wild and appear to resemble a holly planted in a nearby garden, that seedling would not be truely wild. "Northern" American holly. I have these cold tolerant "northern" hollies (Ilex opaca) growing at my nursery. I also have the most southern American hollies from Florida (actually the "scrub holly" Ilex opaca var. arenicola). Both of these American hollies grow very good in zone 7. Parker L.
