Tulip Poplar Tree Pruning

I have a tulip poplar I planted 2 years ago. When we bought it, it was about 3 feet tall. It is finally starting to take off! My question is, branches seem to be growing about 18" off the ground. Should I prune these off to allow faster growth, or is this normal in this type of tree? If I do need to prune them, how and how much.

They really do not NEED to be pruned for the tree but in most situations folks want to mow under them. I vote for after Valentine's Day as the right time unless google reveals some reason associated wih disease or infection particular to this species.

When you prune, two cuts. One to remove 75% of the branch, the next to remove alll but maybe a half inch stub. Don't get into the trunk with your cut it slows the encapulation process.

If by branches you mean individual leaves just rub em off before they become branches.

Oh, only remove a couple branches a year. Never more than a quarter or third of the leaves at a time. It stresses the tree and it is always easier to remove more than to put a branch back on!

FWIW, I prefer this tree when mature to have sone branches relatively low, maybe five or six feet high. The flowers are excellent but can be difficult to see if the lowest limbs are thirty feet up.

Toronado is right - never remove more than a third of the canopy or leaf area at a time. Each year, as the tree grows taller, you can remove the lowest branches until they are where you want them. Leaving lower branches on actually helps the trunk get thicker and stronger faster. Google how to correctly prune a branch so you can see a picture of the branch collar, which you want to leave on.

The Hoya is a Kentiana, or so the tag said so. I have looked it up and it DOES resemble it, but I have a hugh plant that I can take cuttings from. How big are the seedlings that you have? ( all of you) Thank you

I've seen this on two liriodendron and found cankers at the base of both. You might want to have a look to see if there are any lesions just about at soil level. It's touted as being an easy tree and not terribly pest prone but I've found that not to be the case in this area, especially with nursery acquired stock.

My sister had a large one when she lived in Rhinebeck, NY, which was very attractive. It cast a nice shade over an end of the house in the afternoon. Living where I do now, I have many of them, and like them. They are very fast growing. One I planted in the ground, from a 2-yr-old potted seedling (18-22"), about 2.5 years ago, is about 10' tall, and that with mulching, but with minimal watering. I find they are less "spreading" than a maple or oak, but will make enough shade for most purposes. I really like the flowers. My main complaint is that they will lose a branch now and then in high winds, but I think most of mine are clear-cut survivers, not ones that grew up in the open, as they are narrower than some I have seen in the area, and thus wouldn't have grown branches as strong as those in the more exposed, open ground. I also have to admit to a dislike of the 2 weeks or so when they are dropping their seeds, as the seeds are everywhere. Mostly, they don't sprout, thank heavens, but I do weed seedling tulip trees out of flower beds every summer - at least, the leaf is obvious, and they pull easily while young.

I have one and am going to try to keep it small. Latin name is Liriodendron tulipifera aka Tulip Tree because of the blooms that look like tulips. I grow it because it is a larval host plant for the Tiger Swallowtails and Spicebush Swallowtails - butterflies. I love the shape of the leaves which are unique to this tree. It may not be a tree that is recommended for the reasons mentioned above, but it is a native to Oklahoma. I have a yard with a Silver Maple right across from it, which is not much better in terms of wind, ice, and drought either. I also grow Black Cherry and Black Willow - also butterfly larval host plants. The butterflies' caterpillars will in no way appear in large enough numbers to decimate the trees - you would probably never know they had been there unless you specifically looking for them, like I am, lol! Check native plant nurseries for them, and also Sooner Plant Farm here in Oklahoma. I think they are way too expensive, but if you don't mind the expense...... I think you may be able to get one at arborday.org for much less. Susan

give us a pic.. and we can even be more precise ...

down here in adrian MI... i do NOT prune when there is feet of snow on the ground ...

and i do it.. when i walk by with the saw ...

how far is this thing from any structure .???

you prune ANY tree.. to any height you want... you are in charge.. not the tree ... unless you have a couple thousand acres.. and can let nature take its course ....

i would take the bottom most two branches ... and be done with it for this year....

i would also look inside and remove any crossing branches.. one of the two ... and just study it for my future plan ...

if you wait until leaf fall.. and you could post an upright pic;... we could photoshop it and argue about it for you ...

there is never any hurry at this size.. you can always cut them off later.. but you cant staple them back on .. eh???

use you phone upright.. instead of turning it like a camera.. and your pix will pop upright ..

and if thats a stake back there.. get rid of it after two years ...

I have pruned them in almost every month and no harm seems to have come from it.

For crossed branches and all that, it is easier to see what you have to work with once the leaves are not on the tree.
