surprising finds at Lowe's in Dallas

As I shop the big box retailers, I browse the plant sections to see if any other rose appears (besides Knockout)- 90% of the roses they sell are knockouts. I noticed last week that several Lowe's in Dallas are selling Mutabilis and Grandma's yellow (Nacogdoches). I was surprised. I found a number of mutabilis marked down to $3 and bought one. I never buy roses from lowes, but couldn't pass on that deal. Many have knockouts on clearance now also- although I don't find them attractive. I wonder about the origins of Nacodoches and what the original name was and it's breeding history.

Every once in a while the big box stores will surprise you. I always look, too, but haven't found anything out of the ordinary this year. I always wonder if they really sell all those knockouts. I have KO's and love the ones I have, but a little more variety would be nice. Good going on finding a Mutabilis - and at a great price! If I could find a lot like that for $3 each, I would find somewhere to have a Mutabilis hedge. :O

Hey Guys, I was at Lowes today and they moved the rack of misguided amaryllis to the back! I stole pollen...is that illegal?? Anyway, they had 2 of these Deep Red blooms winding out of boxes, their back petals were white splashed with greed mid ribs, but center flowers were deep red to like red/black throats. They were so stressed, poor babies. They were in Red Lion boxes, but next to the other pathetic orangey/red Lions, they were definately NOT RLs...so ok I stole pollen!! lol Wonder what they are...I was on another mission so I didn't barter or try to get an Ami deal, I just stole pollen!

Mike is using one of the professional potting mixes from Fafard...and even better, it's one in their line of Heavy Weights. Their term, not mine. It's very coarse textured, composed of more slightly composted pine bark than mucky peat. So, we're pretty sure that it's not the mix. Mike, not only could the pH of the water be an issue, but so could the soil temperature. Iron (as well as other miner elements) can remain unavailable for uptake until the temperature warms up. Foliar applications of a chelated iron product can help in cases like this, as well as using a touch of vinegar in your watering can on watering day. We want your next pictures to show a complete turn around!

Thanks, I actually did call Northhaven and they didn't have any. They said they might in the Spring. I also talk to the head horticulturist at Discovery Gardens and found out about their sale in June. That is so far away!! Anyway, I've marked my calendar for June and since then found some generous awesome people who are sending me some and I should get it anyday in the mail. I am actually getting one a. tomentosa and 3 a. serpentaria that I will be able to start with in Spring and hopefully will be able to get a. fimbriata in the Spring to add to them. Right now I have 4 passiflora vines and absolutely love them and I'm looking so forward to adding the pipevine swallowtail to my yard (and many more in the future:) Do you have any other "can't live without" butterfly plants in your yard that do well in dallas and the butterflies love? Zz, you will love it! My LC was a very unusual shade of warm, medium violet with shaded white reverse. It was very fragrant too! I think LC wants more water that it’s gotten, which is probably why it shattered. It’s a very different look than much of what I have, but I’m glad because I’ll use it break up all this sameness. :-)

I was happy to pick up a double delight (a relatively large healthy potted one) from Giant Eagle this week for $6.50 :)

Just this week, I had a very different kind of a VERY surprising find on some Lowe's roses.

In early spring I did an impulse buy at Lowe's of two large, lush plants of 'The Fairy'. I planted them on either side of a wide entry to a section my garden where I grow Portlands combined with a few Buck roses. After a few weeks, the foliage on the Lowe's plants began to have a strange, stippled appearance. I coddled them with plenty of moisture, some dilute organic fertilizer, etc., but things did not improve. Then the immediately adjacent Portlands and Bucks began to exhibit the same signs of distress . . .

I'm kind of an insomniac, & in the wee hours of night before last, it occured to me: SPIDER MITES???? Even tho I have never, EVER, had a problem with spider mites in my garden, could SPIDER MITES possibly be the problem? So, I immediately researched the issue online, and, at dawn's early light, I rushed out to confirm that indeed I DO have an infestation of spider mites, thanks to Lowe's and to my own stupidity. I knew better than to purchase those roses in the first place, and I certainly knew better than to plant them without a period of quarantine. So, as of last spring, I've made my FINAL purchase of roses from a big box store. Sometimes it works out fine, and sometimes the results are disastrous. I've no doubt that the source of my problem is whatever mass producer of plants it is that supplies roses to Lowe's.
