Is this R. Centifolia?

The Centifolia pictures on HMF aren't all alike by any means. My rose looks like some of them, but not others. But the buds and sepals look very much like the drawing on HMF.

This very fragrant rose has never gotten bushy; it consists of a few long canes most of the time. Blooms once in spring. It was here when we moved in 33 years ago. It could have been planted at any time. The house is c. 1850.

Do you have a photo that includes more of the foliage? The bloom kind of reminds me of the alba hybrid 'Queen of Denmark'...

Can be damask Ispahan. Pictures of leaves, canes and unopened buds will help to identify. I dont think it is rosa Centifolia. Bloom shape is different.

Eric, and whomever else can't come on the 14th, this garden is always open to the public, so you can come any time. It's well worth the trip. I saw it only once before, two years ago, and have talked and thought about it ever since. Does R. Centifolia bloom on old wood??

"Blooming on old wood" is shorthand for a great deal of information. For example, many, if not all, once-bloomers will produce bloom from a cane that grew last year or earlier but whose laterals were all removed. So the rose isn't breaking the rules - which would be producing a new basal and blooming in the same year - because it is blooming on ...."old wood" that grew new laterals in the spring. I find this all the time with ramblers. If we carefully select wood for propagation that has already bloomed, say a blooming lateral, many rambler plants will bloom the following spring on laterals produced from that little cutting. Having said all that, I am not at all sure what you have from Hortico. That would require pictures.

I believe there are a couple of forms of 'Centifolia' out there, one taller than the other. The tall one I've heard can reach six feet, but I don't know it. The form I'm familiar with doesn't usually get over four feet, usually shorter, and it doesn't send out those long canes. A better shot would be helpful, as well as pictures of blooms, etc.

Also, check out Banshee. I don't think it's centifolia, like Olga said, the shape is wrong.

I have Banshee in another spot, I think. It grows where someone had a flower garden a very long time ago.

I'll try to get good pix of the leaf, bud, etc., tomorrow. Thanks!

I think perhaps my closeup photos exaggerated the moss aspect. I looked up Common Moss on HMF, and the photos there looked much mossier. Also, the growth habit and hardiness didn't match. But thanks for the thought!

Common Moss should be hardy in zone 4b. I used to grow it when I lived in zone 4.

Could it be a Damask, something like Petite Lisette or one of the other more full-petalled ones? Can't see the prickles on the branches.

R. x alba semi-plena has a very, very small "moss" (for lack of a better description) on its opening buds, too.
