Flower buds on Butterfly Bush 'Black Knight'

Hi,

I recently planted this buddleia in replacement of a huge bush that was a victim of the harsh winter here in PA. I have never seen flower buds on any butterfly bush that look like this. It reminds me of the weird, round sticky flowers that a dracaena sometimes puts out. I just thought I'd post a picture to see if anyone can identify this as being what the flowers on 'black knight' usually look like in the bud stage. If these are not going to turn into flowers, I suppose I should cut them off?

They're flower buds, but I don't think you have Black Knight. I seem to recall a different type of buddleia that has several round clusters of flowers at the end of the branches that are more of a yellow or peachy color, whereas Black Knight has one long cluster. But, wait until it blooms to see. I could be wrong.

I agree with Karen, this looks like buddleia x weyeriana. See link below for photos. I have this, just planted a week ago. The OP's picture looks very much like mine with the same grey-green leaves and flowers in small clusters like pom poms along the stem.

I grew 'Black Knight' Buddleia from seed via winter sowing back in 2009 and the next year planted out dozens of seedlings that have since grown to maturity. I have them in multiple garden beds, planted in both full and part sun. They're healthy and appear to be bothered by few pests. Flowering is abundant and the butterflies & other pollinators are on them constantly once they bloom. So far none of mine have topped 10 ft. tall which may be related more to sun exposure and soil type than anything else. Butterfly bush should be pruned back to 10" in spring each year (March where I am) since it blooms on new wood. Other than that it's completely maintenance-free. You don't post your location or zone so be advised Buddleia is listed as invasive in some states due to its prolific reseeding.

So i have researched the chinese pistache tree and it is incredibly beautiful with its fall/ winter colors...So now my next question is where do you buy one?!?!?! I have been all over town to different nurseries and they all tell me that they either don't know about the tree, where to find it, or even what it is. I looked at moon valley nursery, and even though they are a little pricey, they dont have it and they said that the best they could offer is the Sweetgum tree...So (1) Does ANYONE who has a Chinese Pistache know where to buy one and (2)Does anyone know about the sweetgum tree? I don't mind at all Sherry. I'm happy to see other people starting threads with the same theme or any threads for that matter. I'm so glad to have something to read and the beautiful photos to look at when I sit down at the computer. It's my "me time" when I need a break. You've all posted such wonderful photos! My Pink Delight butterfly bush is getting crowded out by other shrubs in my mixed border and it hasn't bloomed very well the last couple years so I don't have many photos of butterflies on it. I rooted a start and moved it to another area last spring so maybe next summer will be better. I looked through my photos and found one of a Viceroy And I think this is a Great Spangled Frit

Just a guess, but it might be mites. My Black Knight looks horrendous, yet my white & Pink Delight look spectacular. I also had mite problems with Sungold, which I replaced with Black Knight. Harsh spraying with the hose, especially underneath the leaves, will rid the bush of the mites. Do this every day for about a week. I think that's what I had done with my Sungold and did earlier this summer on the Black Knight. I've never had any major problems with insects on the majority of my buddleias, just a few JB's, and don't use pesticides.

Hi Karen and Cheryl,

I believe you are absolutely correct! I checked out the link and the weyeriana buds match what I have. I must have never come across this type of bush. While I'm sure it will be nice, I am disappointed that it was sold to me as Black Knight (even had a tag on it by that name). I do intend to contact my nursery and inquire about it. I really like the long flowers that most bushes produce. The tag on mine even indicated it as a dark purplish color. I can't believe that the nursery goofed on this. I just hope that this weyeriana grows tall and is hardy. Thanks SO much for the information. I suppose I can get used to the pom-pom flowers! At least it is alive and growing and doing well! But the nursery needs to know that they sold me something different than what I was told.

Keith, I agree that you should tell the nursery they sold you the wrong buddleia. Perhaps they will give you Black Knight since b. weyeriana isn't what you wanted. But I hope you keep b.w. and post back on how it grows for you. I have b. davidii royal red which has a different charm, so I understand why you want black knight. My b.w. is honeycomb which has custard yellow flowers.

I saw it locally on a garden tour and instantly knew I wanted it. Here in NM it grows to about 6' high, around 4' across. Unlike b. davidii it is more upright and statuesque. It makes a BIG statement! The garden where I saw it had a semi-circular bed of them, about 6, all in bloom. It took my breath away.

I spoke to the owners about hardiness. They said they had had them for about 8 years. We're supposed to be Z7, but we've had subzero winters twice in the past 4 years. The b.w. had a lot of dieback, but they pruned it and it grew back strongly.
