I've planted two Dawn Redwoods. One at my house ('Ogon') and a species type at my parents' house. This was the first year the 'Ogon' began making some strides w/ regard to height. The first growing year after I planted the species, it almost doubled in height; and the second growing season it did much of the same. They both responded well to the wet growing season we had. I had concerns about competing branches with my species type, but it worked itself out on its own. The 'Ogon' is quite flimsy still and requires staking. The species type is very sturdy, growing quickly both in height and caliper.

Will repeat in couple days. ==>> not quite.. you will water again ... when either your finger.. or a new hole.. indicates it drying A BIT ... once your finger figures it out.. then you can quite digging the holes .. the holes can get shallower now.. just and inch of two... if that is drying.. A BIT.. you will know.. there is still water below ... since its sept.. and you know its damp below.. with night temps falling.. the soil simply isnt going to dry as fast as it would a month ago ... but do keep checking.. and 'knowing' ... the wholesaler.. understands how bulletproof these things should be.. though we think the pot was small for height.. obviously.. they dont think its too far out of the realm.. if they all died.. they wouldnt stay in biz... knowledge is power.. and you are now learning.. you will probably win ... ken

And there´s one or two more words you can figer out in this sentence... On common names vs scientific: If you assume this is an English/american only forum... If you assume this is an International forum, it would just be nice to try and... get my point I guess... Having to learn English was a pleasure to me. I´m even fluent in some other languages but be familiar with common names of whatever part of the Country trees are from is... interesting but...misses the point of this forum, I guess. English is THE international language. Which is the international language for trees?... I´ve taken the chance to learn all trees scientific names when I got into this adiction. Sometimes I even don´t remember common names. But don´t take me wrong, I don´t mind common american or english tree names. (Even if I did...). I draw the line at calling Cupressus X Nobilis a Chamaecyparis... If you know parent trees are Cupressus... But I can understand that , since everybody in my country calls C.X Leylandii a Chamaecyparis X L. It just is not easy to change old habits... L. P.S. Is C.X Nobilis commonly found at nurseries in the U.K. or the U.S.? Never seen one here.

Here's a picture of a variegated cypress that is a reversion I let go - for now I've seen other examples of that same - or a similar - variegated Sawara* producing a tree habit. I don't know what the correct naming of the cultivar is. And I spent some time looking into it, some years ago. At that time at least it was another one of those garden plant identification subjects where printed photos and descriptions don't match the material at hand. Trying again now with the web being so much in the picture might produce a different outcome. Anyway since it is basically the same foliage on a differently shaped plant I don't know that I would call it a reversion. And I certainly like the cultivar as a small conical tree better than the tuffet it comes from the nursery as. *Sawara cultivars are often quite polymorphic and unstable
