Butterfly Bush and Lilly turning brown

Hello everyone,

I live in Pennsylvania zone 5/6. I am dealing with a yard full of shale and clay. About 1 month ago I purchased a handful of plants; (2) butterfly bushes, (4) ice plants, (2) lilac garden phlox, (2)balloon flowers, (2)Brindisi LA Hybrib Lilly.

At this time one of the butterfly bushes and one of the Lillies are turning brown.

When I planted these I doubled the pot size and back filled with a topsoil/pete moss mix(2 parts topsoil to 1 part pete moss). I layed the black paper down under the tanbark to help with weeds growing through. I water the plants every night right around sun down. When touching the soil at any part of the day the soil still feels damp. The plants are all exposed to sun all day long. There is no shade in my yard. These are all rated to be full sun 6+hrs a day.

Am I watering these plant to much? Could they be diseased? Is the clay soil seeping into the topsoil and chocking out the water? Any recommendations?

Thanks,

P
