Help me pick a maple
Comments (14)Well I went to the nursery today. They had the Karasugawa set aside for me but I wasn't really wowed by it in person. It was my first time at this particular nursery and the gal I spoke with actually knew maples beyond what was on the tag. She helped me out quite a bit and with her help I had it narrowed down to three: Ukigumo (which surprised me but they had a beautiful one), Peaches and Cream, and Villa Taranto. I narrowed it down to PnC and VT based on tree shape/form preference and from there I was hedging. So I texted my husband a picture of both trees and said "Pick one!" He picked Taranto Villa....See MoreMy $12.50 Ukigumo
Comments (8)It is difficult to say just how it will look in a spot like that, but it sounds like to me you will have more of a whitish variegation rather than pinkish in that shady spot. Keep in mind that the variegation is usually only prominent in the spring and on older wood. New growth will usually have splotchy green leaves, while in spring you can have almost entire leaves white with pink intermixed. Personally, I would leave it potted up in a shady spot for the summer so that you can determine how it will do before planting it out. 'Ukigumo' is normally considered a collecter's item as it is sometimes a bit finnicky. But at that price, it is well worth taking a chance on. If you leave it potted up, it will need a decent amount of water. My 1 gal maples need watering daily, but I am in the southeast where it is usually in the 90's during summer. If you plant it out, it will need much less....See MoreAcer palmatum 'Ukigumo'
Comments (11)Not trying to stir it up, but I have "orido-nishiki" that looks like the picture. The red stems are the indicator. I also have "ukigomo" that is as tall as the tree in the picture but not as full, and the leaf color is more chartreuse in addition to the pinkish-whitish colors and there are no dark green leaves, but that could just be due to the light it receives. Like I say, these are just my observations...not trying to make anybody unhappy or pretend I'm an expert. Maybe my trees are mislabeled! Yep, I once got a full moon maple at Orchard Supply Hardware (CA big box store) that was labeled as a regular JM. I knew what is was from the leaves and I snapped it up at a very very nice price. Shhhh. The tree in the picture is lovely....See Moreif you could have only 1 (Floating Cloud, Orangeola, Baldsmith)?
Comments (5)Ukigumo (Floating Clouds) is the nicest and most interesting of the bunch. You will get the most seasonal interest with that maple throughout the year. Orangeola is a nice dissetum but I don't feel it is of specimen quality where I would want to display it in a container or make it the last maple I was going to buy. It makes a great landscape plant and is great for sunny locations. Baldsmith is a beauty in the spring, but fades as the months wear on. It usually becomes unremarkably green in the summer and will have some reddish new growth, but not enough to write home about. If you wanted the disseted form and wanted to stay on a budget, go for the small Baldsmith. The best tree overall is the Ukigumo if you want a more upright plant or tree type and it will outshine the Baldsmith in the spring for color anyway. Hope that helps. I am gald you have such nice choices locally. That helps a great deal. Cheers! MJH...See Moremarcindy
