If the edges of the tire have a series of flat spots (known as "cupping"), it means the tire is bouncing on the road, indicating either seriously worn shock absorbers or struts, an out-of-balance wheel, or an alignment problem. All three are fairly easy to check.

Gee, there's all kinds of places that can and will check yer front end, including the tires. Get yerself down to Pep boys, or Goodyear tire store, or Sears, or any of those places. Surely somebody in one of those places can tell you what your trouble is.
I'd bet somebody hopped a curb, or banged the tire into something hard, and that threw your front end alinement out of whack! Heck, if i could afford a late model VW, i wouldn't be trying to find the trouble here! No, i'd of been out to a tire store, having the front end checked!

Rusty Thanks for the post. I had to the vw dealership garage and the goodyear tire dealer. The vw has put new tires on it under warnaty, but they can't find the reason for the problem. Its just a pain to be running back so often, with just 10.000 miles on the car. also its the first new car I have purchased in 30 years.

Cupping is usually from an out of balance wheel, bad bearings,bad shocks/struts, or some other such thing that causes the wheel to vibrate. A bad alignment won't usually cup the tires, that'll just cause the tires to wear unevenly. I'd suggest getting all of these checked. One or more of them are the cause for the cupping.

At 10K miles, I would try to pressure VW to push for replacing the tires as defective (VW should get the tire OEM involved) under warranty. You should also try to get the dealer to have a VW factory service representative to check this car/tires. Factory reps sometimes know of model specific issues that a local dealer may not be aware of.

Way back in 1949 (Yeah, i'm that old, at least), i bought a brand new 1949 Ford yellow convertible!(Color had a lot to do with it!)
That car, with 1600 miles on it, had worn the front tires BALD! So, i took it to the dealership, and i think they gave me a "wall job", and 2 tires! 1600 miles later, the same thing! And the same wall job!
Then i hit a small depression in the road and the front wheels went out to each side, and that meant a 15 mile tow job. And, another mis-adjustment.
I finally resorted to buying used tires with good tread and sidewall cuts. And installed liners in them. And, traded it in on an MG right hand drive roadster, 1947 year of manufacture, and had no more tire troubles!

Go to "www.edmunds.com" and click on "forums" Then click on "VW forums" and look at all the discussions on 2007 models. If you don't see a problem like yours being discussed make a new post about your tire problem. I'll bet you are not alone.

You didn't post which VW you have, but I did some searching and found that the Volkswagen Touarag is notorious for wearing out the front tires.

If your car dealer doesn't know this, and neither does Good Year - you are talking to the wrong people..... Grade 10 high-school auto-shop kids learn all this on their 1'st lesson.

- solution: The tire wear called CUPPING is a smooth valley and hill pattern that crosses the tread on a diagonal of about 45-60 degrees. The pattern is usually all around the tire with the hill peaks about 2 inches apart.

The problem is corrected with a new spindle that is ground with a 10' angle (10/60 th of a degree) at the mounting flange, which is installed on the left rear, then the thrust angle is corrected by shifting the rear axle assy. (equalizing toe-in relative to vehicle center line) on a 4 head alignment machine.

This is official VW procedure. VW does not recommend plastic shims to correct alignment problems, but many shops do without much trouble."

It's funny... 'cause it's true....

I had 3 VWs in a row (Golf, Jetta, GTI). The front end problems got progressively worse. The Golf was fine, the Jetta lost a front left wheel bearing at 50K miles (ouch!) and the GTI lost a front left wheel bearing and also about 4 strut top bearings. I also had trouble with all three driving in deep snow as it had the tendancy of loading ice in the inside of the wheels and wheel wells and then rip off the plastic shrouds from under the front end. The front left on the GTI was never the same after the wheel bearing job and the same tire cupping problem started. Fortunately it was a lease car and it went back to the dealer problems and all.
