Time To Replace The Tires...But What Tread?

I have a JD LT-133 that has Carlisle Super lugs on the rear. They are replacements and work very nice for turf and snow plowing duties. Now it is time to replace the Titan turf tires on the front as they are worn down smooth. I imagine mostly from the duty on the driveway in winter. The tire size is 15x6.00-6. I was wondering if there are any thoughts to replace with lugs like the back, turf, ribbed or other treads that would do well for both warm weather (lawn, dirt, woods) and cold weather (snow)use. I was planning to go with luigs if I can find some in that size..but wanted to get some ideas 1st. Any info/ideas are greatly appreciated...

If your existing tires work well in those conditions, just replace them with the same.

If you want a bit more bite in certain conditions, a ribbed or AG tread will help. Make sure you mount the AG treads backwards.

You'll probably need studs or chains if you need more winter grip.

Wouldn't think you want lugs in front. Probably make steering a little lousy. A ribbed tire is better suited as you aren't worried about traction as much as you want directional control. What you have is a good compromise and would be a safe bet too.

chris8796, thanks for posting that information. My problem is that I have all wood in the main level and the stairs are all oak so there wouldn't be anything added to the treads, but the problem comes in at the top of the steps as you would now step onto new wood floors so the drop between the second floor hall to the first step would be too high. Then the drop from the last step on the main level is too short. I then have a similar problem with the stairs going from the wood floor main level down to the daylight finished basement - again all oak stair case in which the drop from the main floor to the first downstairs step would be too great. Also I'm having the basement flooring changed to engineered wood and the would cause a problem in the last step as you stepped on to the basement floor. It was just easier to keep carpeting. I wish I knew when I was building the house that I wanted all wood stairs and floors, then I wouldn't have this problem now. I also wish I'd realized that they were using all oak - when I had asked for all maple he told me that since we were covering it with carpet not to worry. The other thing is the people doing my floors insist that if I did all wood floors that I had to have at least carpet or safety treads added - not a look I wanted.

Go to a real lumberyard---not Home Depot/Lowe's/Menards/etc. The yard will had at least two sizes---by length----to minimize waste. Here in Kansas City, oak stair treads start at $26. The leading edges of treads have a bullnosed profile. That profile is quite simple to do on the ends with a router and roundover bit. There is often more to that job than simply removing the old treads and installing the new. Depending on how the old treads were installed, for instance. There is also the height of each step to consider---as that is an extremely important part of a stairway. Normal height is 7" or so, there is a variance allowed by the building codes. The risers(the vertical parts of the stairs) may need to be removed to take off the old treads. That can easily damage them and then new risers are necessary. To install risers, I drill holes---generally three for each stringer(the sawtoothed supports for the stairs)put rosin paper over the stringers(to eliminate squeaks) and use #10 screws at least 3" long to install each tread. I then use the plugs I made, using scraps from the treads, to fill the screw holes---carefully aligning the grain pattern. Sand them smooth, apply stain, and then finish. Takes a day to do the installation and staining, and three trips in three days to apply the finish(to allow drying time). For a simple stair such as yours, one man, one day and three trips---I'd charge $350 for labor if there were no complications. But, I run a retirement5 remodeling business---more something to keep me busy than to earn a living.

Thank you for your responses. Here are pics. There is a 3rd stringer underneath. Steps up to front door landing don't get much use. (We come in through garage.) I've had treads and landings replaced a few times over the years with wood. But thinking grey composite would last longer / look better. As you can see from the bottom landing photo (4th), the stair treads are approx 1 1/2" thick and the landing boards (both top and bottom landings) are 1" thick. Don't know if I would have to / could mix composite replacement board thicknesses? TIA.

Yes, if never used spiral stairs before, you have to pay attention. When I was in Amsterdam we had them in the hotel, (it seems there is a lack of fire regulations there as egress goes). and elevator you can barely fit 2 people so I used stairs all the time, they are fun and add nice detail in some circumstances especially when you tight on space, or if there is a loft, to down into the basement as the second stair, etc... but if you have small kids in the house, they can be dangerous if they're not careful.

I am revisiting this as winter is right around the corner and I'll need to get my plow/tractor in order. I located some Carlisle x-trac tires for the front that look to have a modified lug. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with these. The only other issue is that I am replacing the Titan Turf 15x6x6 with these and the new size is 15x5x6. Not sure if that will be a problem. Any thoughts/ideas welcome. Thanks.

I've been through the same dilemma with my GT series tractor. I just put Carlisle Tru Power lug tires on the rear. I opted to keep the turf tires on the front because they're actually a pretty good all-around steering tire. I don't think chevron-lug-type tires on the front would serve any benefit unless you had a 4x4 tractor, which you don't.
I haven't found a true agricultural rib tire for lawn and garden tractors, but you might want to look at the Carlisle Snow Hog in a 15x5-6 for some ultimate steering traction. Other than that, I think you're pretty much stuck with turf tires in that size.
