Gum Ball Tree root problem

Hi -- Soooo, I was looking at my Problem Child, the 40 year old gum ball tree that I cuss every summer because I have to pick up all those balls. I had just trimmed off lots and lots of new growth off the roots at ground level. And I mean LOTS! Soooo, I was thinking, since I can't really get my tractor mower in there and mow grass and those new sprigs, why couldn't I just cover the whole area with something (black mulch fabric?) pin it all down and cover it all with a blanket of chopped leaves (of which I have a LOT of bags left). ??? Just let Nature take the hindmost and see what happens. What do you all think would happen?? A best, I wouldn't have to use the gas trimmer on all those sprigs and all I would have to deal with were the balls this summer, which would fall in the yard. If they fell on the fabric and mulch, so what?? hahaha

I'm just nuts enough to try it, but I'd like some Sage Advice first.

What do you think?? (be kind).

Thanks -

Sunny
