Beech put out about 3 ft growth spurt this spring

{{gwi:365449}} The new growth is weak and is leaning down right now so you can't tell it put on alot of growth. So I guess they can put out some good growth after they get settled in.

i really like the bed size you have provided to the various trees ... really planning ahead there ...

Well this is as good a central topic as any :)

I also enjoyed the series. Do you know the source of your beech tree (as in where it came from as a nut)?

ps - your trees are MUCH larger than I had pictured in my head for some reason lol - especially your dawn redwood!

The tuteur is 3 foot tall, so these foxtail lilies, Eremurus 'Roford', were only a little taller than that when the picture was taken some years ago. My bulb list says that this variety gets 30-48 inches tall. They eventually got a little over 4 foot tall, because I remember being surprised one year to see them well above the tuteur and the Clematis tangutica 'Sheriffi'. I also started with 3 roots (quite large & strange looking, as I remember) & after a few years had 7 or so flower stalks. Foliage at the bottom was minimal. I planted them in my gravel bed, gave them no care whatsoever, no fertilizer (this particular clem doesn't need any, very vigorous), no supplemental water, left them up over winter & they did fine until the gravel bed flooded one season & rotted (I presume) them out. P.S. white flower to the left bottom is a penstemon, either Husker Red or Alba, I still have both in that bed.

wisconsitom, the forested area I got it from is full of lots of mature white pine and baby elm, beach, hemlock, black spruce (I think?), paper birch, unidentified baby birch, maple, and red oak. Very few baby white pine...succession in progress, I guess. My parents bought the plot of land across the street from their summer place because it came with a narrow water access next to our property and new environmental regulations meant they needed more land to put a septic tank. It came with some forest. The empty space I was trying to fill it with has the salt/wind/ sand/clay problem, so I wasn't sure what saplings to try to transplant that would do well in that environment, and had trouble identifying what was what. I didn't want to dig up and kill too many saplings that wouldn't survive. Any suggestions? I also swiped a baby white pine, and a mountain ash. The white pine seems to be in decent shape. Ash less so. Oh, I did find an online deal on bare root American Beech, and am debating getting it. EDIT: This is where I ended up putting it. Growth spurt despite the cold

Hi Ladies, Naz, I recall you're in France, don't know how cold it gets. Here in my kitchen that day, it got pretty cold. All the other Hoyas ignored it, this Tsangii ... pooped, but I was clumsy too. Interesting that your flowers go so fast, the Tsangii's recent prior blooming lasted a good 5-6 days after the buds opened fully. I'm bummed, but have askd the plant to do it just one more time & I won't touch it at all!! Hi Julia, I'd suggest you bring yr. Obovata back into the light. Mine gets a fair bit including some direct as it's closest on the shelves to the windows. The new growth I have now is on a single cutting I'd taken in Spring, a ft. of vine w/ one leaf & one node. I did water rooting, put it back in Mother pot & it's new growth is its first leaf coming out. While I've threatened some plants in my time, I don't the Hoyas (couldn't ever tell these plants to bloom or die, as I've experienced some that sulked). One for 1 yr & 2 for 2. Recently, a dorky little cutting from my sister's varieg. Carnosa hybrid (grown w/ benign neglect that grows but doesn't bloom) sat for TWO yrs. doing nothing but dropping a leaf now & then. It's down to ONE leaf & just 2 wks ago it threw a new leaf. Sometimes to encourage them to do SOMETHING, I'll pot them smaller, or if already small, sometimes if there's enough of it, I'll take cutting & find that that often kicks the remaining growth into new growth. I read somwhere (maybe abt AVs), that sometimes knocking the pot can help spur activity. Once it a while, in my frustration w/ them, instead of cursing a Hoya, I'll just knock the pot into the table thinking, OK do something!!! Can't really say much abt the results, but I felt better!! These crazy Hoyas of ours sometimes have their own sense of timing I think!

stunted growth in my sq ft garden

Thanks for all the great suggestions! This weekend I'll pull out the things that are probably too stunted to salvage and add compost and cottonseed meal to fertilize the bed. Since I've been using bagged "organic compost" and decomposted cow manure from Lowe's, I'll try a different compost this time for some variety. Will then replant with things that stand a chance of tolerating our impending summer heat, and see what happens. shebear: Hope you're right about that clay soil; sometimes it seems more suited for making bowls and pots than for growing plants! But, I will say it's an order of magnitude better this year than last year. Have already had more tomatoes this year than all of last season!

I had a beech that did growth spurts like that. Unfortunately it was in my parents yard and they didn't like it so the chopped it down :(

I like to plant shade plants under my trees so the big mulch circle helps with that, and when they get bigger it looks more in proportion. Thanks for the compliments Ken. The Beech tree came from the woods near my house. If I remember right it has been in the ground for 7 years. It was about 3 ft tall when I planted it. I couldn't find it commercially. As for the trees being big, we have been getting lots of rain for the last 3 or 4 years. Famartin sorry to hear about what your parents did to the beech. My dad has limbed up spruces bashed into trees trunks in the past which lead to the demise ( I think) of a big Tulip tree. I cut the grass now. Most of the trees were small when planted, so the theory that small ones establish faster seems to be true.

Beech trees are not very slow growing, at least the european kind. They need a lot of water, and if they get it they gladly grow 2-3 ft a year even here, at their northen native limit.

This tree only grew about a foot a year for 3 or 4 years, it slowly increased to 2 ft a year etc. So I was shocked to see it put out 3+ ft this spring. It has gotten lots of rain the past 4 years. It's mulched too. I have a groundcover and Columbine flowering perennials under it. If the rains aren't as plentiful the plants under it may not do so good. In the picture it still looks small to me, but it is taller than me. The statue under it is about 15 inches tall. I've heard that the European beech grows faster too. I think someone on here mentioned that before too.

It's amazing how much growth trees can put on if under the right conditions. I have a blue ash that was going on it's third year in my yard and it put on a good 2.5'. A Magnolia Ã¯Â¿Â½ soulangeana 'Black Tulip', put on about the same amount of growth this spring. Also, 2 pecans that are on their 3rd year in my yard are taking advantage of this moist spring and put on 3'+ of growth this year!

Here's my blue ash. From the angled branch at the bottom of the picture to the top is all one season's growth! It comes in spurts which is cool to see, the third flush just started sprouting. I don't think I've seen a tree grow so fast. Almost 3'!

That is great, I haven't tried Ash trees in my yard. I'm hooked on oaks. If you have 3 ft now, you may get more before the end of the growing season! I have gotten some good growth from my Quercus Albas, 3 of them. Surprisingly about 3 ft each. You probably have about 3 or 4 weeks ( at least ) more growing season than me. Post more pics if you get even more growth.
