All of my Hoyas live outside unless there is an overnight cold danger , in which case everyone comes in , ( sounds like some peoples pets ) ! I limit watering this time of year and no fertilizer , so with short daylight hours and cool nights....we're stalled !!
The only exception is an australis , who is growing , flowering and producing more peduncles. Young lacunosa has its first umbel , but the plant itself is not visibly growing.
We have some hoyas in the greenhouse at work , but only the imperialis are active.
You know , I read many postings , other forums as well , where peoples homes are jammed with plants. I just did a 'head count' around me and I only have 4 plants inside. That is too weird !! The only explanation for this ,that I can think of , is that with the exception of the last 6 years , I have lived all my life up north ,( including the far north ) . Now we are in central east coast Florida and since this house has tall windows , I can see green everywhere and year round.

Hi Florajilly - You're lucky to live in such temperate climes! I have 30+ hoyas crowding my bedroom window! It's interesting to me to learn which hoyas go into dormacy with the cool weather and which continue to grow. My goal is to have hoyas blooming year-round...

I'm finding it to be (among my Hoyas) not so much of a growth spurt, but rather a number of them just didn' slow down, a few have just begun to do so. A couple of my Carnosas were still throwing new vines til a bit ago. My Lacunosas are still having new growth as are Obovata, several diff. Pubicalyxes & my Imperialis has chosen now to start a new vine (I had just taken a cutting) & a spot just above where I cut has this 1" bit of new vine. A small cutting of compacta has just woken up & made a new leaf, odd timing, this one's been slow all summer.

Tsangii was reblooming its one spur, but I think got a bit cold blasted one recently chilly day. I noticed it & as I lifted it to move further from the window I kncked the spur & all its little budlets came showering down on me -- ack. So I'm assuming it coldblasted or that spur would have held its buds when I bumped it. Still I could kick myself ... sigh!!

Pirate : my tsangii hangs pretty close to the window and doesnt blast its spurs/flowers, I think that it's a matter of life expectancy of the flower, mine drop after 2 days :(

Pirate, I envy your luck with Obovata. I bought a big plant with peduncles and it sulked for a year, hardly growning and NEVER blooming. I finally just shoved it ina dark corner as punishment. My hoya motto: produce or die. ha ha.

Naz, I recall you're in France, don't know how cold it gets. Here in my kitchen that day, it got pretty cold. All the other Hoyas ignored it, this Tsangii ... pooped, but I was clumsy too. Interesting that your flowers go so fast, the Tsangii's recent prior blooming lasted a good 5-6 days after the buds opened fully. I'm bummed, but have askd the plant to do it just one more time & I won't touch it at all!!

I'd suggest you bring yr. Obovata back into the light. Mine gets a fair bit including some direct as it's closest on the shelves to the windows. The new growth I have now is on a single cutting I'd taken in Spring, a ft. of vine w/ one leaf & one node. I did water rooting, put it back in Mother pot & it's new growth is its first leaf coming out.

While I've threatened some plants in my time, I don't the Hoyas (couldn't ever tell these plants to bloom or die, as I've experienced some that sulked). One for 1 yr & 2 for 2.

Recently, a dorky little cutting from my sister's varieg. Carnosa hybrid (grown w/ benign neglect that grows but doesn't bloom) sat for TWO yrs. doing nothing but dropping a leaf now & then. It's down to ONE leaf & just 2 wks ago it threw a new leaf.

Sometimes to encourage them to do SOMETHING, I'll pot them smaller, or if already small, sometimes if there's enough of it, I'll take cutting & find that that often kicks the remaining growth into new growth. I read somwhere (maybe abt AVs), that sometimes knocking the pot can help spur activity. Once it a while, in my frustration w/ them, instead of cursing a Hoya, I'll just knock the pot into the table thinking, OK do something!!! Can't really say much abt the results, but I felt better!!

These crazy Hoyas of ours sometimes have their own sense of timing I think!

Hola - hmmm..knock 'em around a bit, eh? maybe i'll try it next time I'm frustrated. You might be right, Pirate, I did put the obovata in a larger pot, so maybe it's concentrating on growing roots instead of vines. But my "rare" hoyas get the primo spots on the window ledge.

Hey Pirate, yeah make sure you ask the plant, you know how finicky they are! I remember a couple of years ago someone posted something like their hoya fell off the fridge and since its been either growing at least, or sending out spurs.. there were a couple of us that had experienced that. I've heard this before, that plants respond to this kind of stress by putting out new growth or flowers (they think they're in danger adn therefore do something).
PS: I'm in Z 7 -8 , we have lows of 30s and highs of 40s :O with not much sun. Pretty depressing if you ask me.

Mine are all inside, but I've noticed just recently a growth spurt in H. caudata, bella, and lacunosa.

All 3 of these are quite small plants to begin with, so I'm happy to see them growing nicely.

H. bella and lacunosa have even grown a couple of spurs!

My obovata isn't doing much either, but I did see a big growth spurt in that one earlier in the year (late winter, early spring), so am hoping that another 'spurt' will follow soon.

Well my Tsangii is taking pity on me after all. Its single spur (which I carelessly knocked the buds off of a couple of days ago) appears to be regrowing its buds. As promised, I am not touching it 'til it blooms (I had moved it high where I can look up into the spur w/out touching it). Here's hoping ..... ;>)

My australis always takes its biggest growth spurt in fall, and I'm almost positive it grows best this time of year. Am I nuts or could it be its Australian heritage??! Not sure which one it is--big leafed one. Am curious to know if anyone else has noticed this?

Now that you mention it, Mare2, my Australis (which is a single large rooted cutting has grown a lot recently, too!

Glad to know my plant isn't the lone freak, Nanw, and I just discovered it has its first buds!!! What a great Christmas present!!!

My only Australis is variegated & seems to grow most of the year, it's even putting on a couple of new leaves now. Congrats on yr. Australis buds, I've never seem 'em myself, how exciting!

Finlaysonii is putting on new growth, as is Loheri (which I never seem to see in active growth). Pubicalyx 'Splash' seems to be waking up too along w/ a small sprig of Compacta. Odd timing.
